Summary

Michael Thacker reflects on a Tony Robbins quote about converting knowledge into action to overcome self-doubt and inaction, emphasizing the importance of taking steps towards one's goals even if it means risking failure.

Abstract

In a personal essay, Michael Thacker discusses the impact of a Tony Robbins quote on his life, particularly during a period of self-doubt triggered by conversations with friends and colleagues. The quote, which stresses the necessity of turning knowledge into action, resonates with Thacker as he acknowledges his tendency to over-analyze and procrastinate. He argues that while action may lead to stumbles or failure, it is the only way to make progress and find answers. Thacker uses his own experiences to illustrate the value of trying and the sense of accomplishment that comes from taking action, even in the face of potential failure.

Opinions

  • Thacker admits that he is not a massive fan of Tony Robbins but finds his quotes, particularly the one about converting knowledge to action, to be inspiring and reflective of his own process.
  • He recognizes that he has a habit of over-analyzing and over-researching, which prevents him from taking action, a pattern that has been exacerbated by quarantine.
  • Thacker believes that knowledge without action is worthless and that true success comes from applying what one has learned.
  • He suggests that the fear of failure should not deter one from trying, as attempting something new is a success in itself and a step towards getting out of one's own way.
  • Thacker sees the act of trying, even with the possibility of failure, as a form of success because it represents an effort to move forward and build confidence.

What this Tony Robbins Quote Said to Me

It’s not as hard to get out of your own way when you try something new.

Usually, a quote by anyone such as Tony Robbins, or most anyone doesn’t move me to write, but this one did. It made me stop and think too.

I’ve had conversations with friends and past colleagues lately that have made me doubt my direction.

The conversations have not been cynical or mean-spirited per se, but have left me feeling at a loss at what to do next.

With me not wanting, or accepting that type of defeatist attitude, I did as I often do, and searched out something to inspire me. I settled on this quote by Tony Robbins.

“I love quotes… but in the end, knowledge has to be converted to action, or it’s worthless.” — Tony Robbins

First off, I will tell you that I am not a massive fan of Tony Robbins. It’s not that I don’t like him or anything, but I will say that other than his quotes that I see across the internet, I don’t know a lot about him. Maybe I should find out sometime.

Yet, the quotes that I see, like the one above, almost always speak to me. This one more than most because it reflects my process in so many ways.

I have often been accused of not being able to get out of my own way. There are many reasons my friends and others say that, too numerous to go into here.

Yet, it’s often said for me to get out of my own way because I tend to over-analyze and over research the situation, and in turn, not take action. I have been doing that a lot lately, since the onset of the quarantine.

Looking at this quote by Tony reminded me that I could look for quotes like this one, read every blog post, and watch every YouTube video, but if I don’t do something with that knowledge, why bother.

When you take action, not pretending to, but doing it, you are making something happen. You are getting out of your own way.

Sure, when you take action, you may find that you don’t know as much as you thought you did, and you may stumble. Heck, you may even fail, but at least you will have tried.

Having tried, you may find that you are that much closer to an answer to a long asked question. You may be much closer to a sense of accomplishment.

Perhaps you will find that you have moved the needle since you used the knowledge you have and tried and inspired your confidence.

Heck, having read all the Tony Robbins quotes, and others. All the knowledge from all those blog posts and videos that you may be closer to success.

Sure, you may stumble when you try. You may even fail. Yet, you won’t be a failure.

Because in the end, having tried and failed, you have already succeeded. You have already taken action. You have already gotten out of your own way!
