What This Guy Is Trying to Convey by Wearing All His Trash in Public

You need to understand this now. It’s serious.

You buy a cup of coffee, drink it with a smile, and then throw the disposable cup in the bin.

Bingo! — It’s gone, right?

The guy in the above photo wants you to think about it twice.

He wants you to visualize how much trash you produce in a month by wearing his trash in public. Then it’s up to you. You can change your shopping/consuming behavior or continue the way you live your life — it’s your choice.

Rob Greenfield just wants you to see the unseen: the reality you ignored all throughout your life until now.

But wait, who is Rob Greenfield?

Who is this Trash Man?

As his name suggests, Rob Greenfield is like a ‘green field’ in a city of chaos.

Before adopting an environmentally friendly sustainable lifestyle, he was just an average American. Born in the small town of Ashland, Wisconsin, he lived the American dream (or whatever you call it) for the first part of his life.

Then, at the age of 24, he discovered the futility of this rat race for more and decided to adopt some changes in his life.

He found out the life we’re living focusing on worldly possessions is not only unhealthy for us but also detrimental to mother earth. Because we are living against nature, not in harmony with nature.

Being a believer in Gandhi’s philosophy, “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” Rob introduced some brave changes in his life.

He quit his lavish lifestyle only to embrace a minimalistic and earth-friendly way to live.

He canceled his last bill in 2014 and started living bills-free life in a tiny house. He also started dumpster diving for food and producing nearly zero waste. Moreover, he sold his car and bought a bamboo bicycle for transportation.

Over the years, he did so many extreme things to inspire others toward an earth-friendly lifestyle, for example, quitting credit cards/dependency on money, living off-grid in a tiny house, using only natural water sources, growing and foraging 100% of his food for a year, using leaves as toilet papers, wearing his own trash in public, and more.

Sounds impossible and crazy, right?

Why Rob Greenfield Is Wearing His Trash in Public, Again!!

Rob did this experiment/campaign first in October 2016.

He lived like an average American(shopping, eating out, etc.) for a month. But instead of throwing the trash away, he put all of it in the pockets of his specially-designed suit and roamed the street of New York, asking people questions like ‘Do you know where your trash goes?”.

Seeing the shocking visual of trash, some people thought him crazy, and some called him Trash Monster or Trash Man.

“My main focus is trying to educate and inspire people to make less trash. Some people have zero idea. For them, once they toss something, it’s totally out of sight, out of mind. They don’t get the serious environmental problems it causes,” Rob explained.

Rob’s Trash Me Campaign was a huge success as it was covered by hundreds of media outlets worldwide, creating over 1 billion media impressions. As a result, many people realized how they were destroying mother earth and were inspired to become a part of the solution.

So, Rob decided to do it again.

This time he chose Los Angeles, the city known for being the home to the rich and famous. Since April 20, 2022, Rob has been living like an average American with only one exception — he was wearing all his trash while roaming in public.

The purpose of doing this extreme campaign is the same as the previous.

He wants to grab people’s attention and raise awareness about the trash they produce every day by showing the visual.

Rob says he doesn’t believe in ‘right’ or ‘wrong,’ and he is not telling anyone what to do or not to do. Instead, his job is to create an opportunity for people to see the truth.

“Where is your trash? — That is what I want you to think of when you see me!” He explained in a social media post.

He further added — “Is it(trash) filling up landfills? Will it be there for hundreds or even thousands of years after you’re gone? Is the plastic you put into the recycle bin actually recycled? What could you do differently to live in harmony with our Earth? I am here to encourage you to dig deeper, to find the truth behind your trash.”

Believe it or not — an average American produces around five pounds (4.4 pounds, to be specific) of trash every day. Unfortunately, most of it ends up being landfills or polluting the ocean due to our out-of-sight, out-of-mind attitude.

Being the billboard of American consumerism for a month, Rob Greenfield is trying to show you this truth.

Seeing the shocking visual Rob displays, if you stop for a moment and think about your day-to-day actions causing harm to you and the environment, it would be the first step towards living with nature in harmony, therefore, saving the planet.
