Summary

The poem "What They Will Remember" by RBGraham emphasizes the profound impact of loving someone deeply, believing in their innate strength, and providing a safe space for their vulnerabilities, which is what people will cherish and recall.

Abstract

The poem delves into the essence of human connection, highlighting that in times of distress, it is not one's shortcomings that are remembered, but rather the love and acceptance that was given. It speaks to the power of loving "wildly" and "with reckless abandon," suggesting that such love helps individuals see their own worth reflected in the eyes of their beholder. The poem underscores the importance of believing in someone when they cannot believe in themselves, welcoming their heart as one's own, and speaking their name with tenderness, which can lead to self-love. It also touches on the significance of remaining open and providing comfort amidst darkness, fear, shame, and anger, ultimately illuminating the path to healing through love and support.

What They Will Remember

A Poem

No one will remember

what you failed to do,

what they will remember, in their

darkest moments, alone and

afraid, is how you

loved them

wildly

with reckless abandon

deeper and deeper

until they could see

their own soul’s reflection

in your

wide open eyes

what they will remember is

how you believed in their

strength and

their goodness when

they could not

how you welcomed their heart

as your own

what they will remember

is how you spoke their name

with such tenderness

they could finally

love themselves

what they will remember

is how you remained open despite

the darkness rattling at the windows

how you held space for

the shame and anger, for

the fearful story, then

turned on the light

and sang the song

that saved their life
