What The Will Smith Oscars Altercation Says About Our Society

Are we really that easily distracted?

Unless you have been off the grid the past 2 days, it appears that all everyone seems to be talking about right now is the incident that occurred at the Oscars.

The incident

For anyone unaware of what happened Chris Rock was presenting an award and doing what most presenters do at the Oscars, roasting the audience.

Unfortunately, he targeted Jada Pinkett-Smith’s shaven head. Now the issue with this is she has been suffering from Alopecia, which is an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss. She has been vocal about her struggle with Alopecia, which then prompted her to shave her head.

“Me and this alopecia are going to be friends.” –Jada Pinkett-Smith

So after the tactless joke about her hair, Will Smith jumped to his wife’s defense and walked up to the stage and punched Rock in the face.

The world went wild

Now I am not here to take sides or say who was in the wrong, but it has been a topic that has been trending for over 24 hours now on multiple platforms.

Twitter saw its highest number of engagements ever on that platform due to this incident with a whopping number of 32.8m related to the Oscars. This is vastly higher than anything else that is trending at the moment.

This has also been a trending topic in news outlets, magazines, and other social media platforms and the memes have already started rolling in.

Whilst this has been a highly controversial incident, with people weighing in to defend and condemn actions and words from both parties, it seems to be the only thing that people are talking about right now.

I am guilty of this too, don’t get me wrong, I wanted the tea on what went down that night but there is a difference between it piquing your interest for a few minutes and becoming obsessed with it.

Are we forgetting?

It seems like the world has forgotten about the fact that there is an actual war going on, climate change is still real, and there are a vast number of refugees needing a new home.

I understand that there are in-depth conversations this incident has opened up, that affect both sides. There are questions as a society we should be asking.

Why should it be so ok to make a joke at the expense of a woman of colour who is also battling a health condition?

Why does it seem like casual assault appears to be normalised?

These are important things that should be brought to the surface, and there are a few articles that have addressed this but they are scarce. It seems like memes and jokes and gossip are the main results of this.

This highlights how pop culture will always turn heads more than issues relating to politics and the environment and it is sad that this is where we are at as a society today.

There is nothing wrong with having the guilty pleasure of indulging in a bit of celebrity gossip but when it pulls the wool over our eyes and distracts us from the issues around us is when it becomes problematic.

Maybe it is ignorance or the fact that pop culture appears to be juicier, but it can’t be the only thing we talk about until the next controversy happens.

When the incidents spark debates and important conversations then there is a moral to the story, lessons to be learned. But tweeting about these things for clout and attention only highlights that most of society is only concerned with shiny objects and not the bigger picture things that are unsettling but more impactful.

What happened that night should provoke conversations, but perhaps not enough of the ones we should be having. When we are so wrapped up in this Hollywood culture we numb ourselves to the truths that surround us. Truths that could help to create positive change and a better world for us to live in.
