What the switch to the e-cigarette did for me

After 27 years, I switched from regular cigarettes to e-cigarettes half a year ago. Here I write about my experiences

I started smoking relatively late, at the age of eighteen. It was a holiday with friends, and I was the only non-smoker.

Out of curiosity, I tried a cigarette one evening and was not immediately enthusiastic. Nevertheless, I smoked the next day again, because even if I didn’t like the taste, I liked the attitude of a smoker.

I did something unreasonable, but nobody could forbid me. I considered myself incredibly cool.

Twenty-seven years later, I didn’t think I was cool anymore. I still loved smoking, but I hated coughing up the mucus that had settled in my bronchi overnight in the bathroom first thing in the morning.

Besides, I finally wanted to start running again. I had been a runner before, while I had been smoking for years, but I hadn’t felt the effects of smoking back then.

But now I knew that something had to happen. Above all, I no longer wanted to run the risk of dying of cancer or a heart attack later on.

E-cigarettes had been around for quite some time, but the available devices did not convince me. You had to buy expensive devices, try out different mouthpieces, buy different batteries, and find your way in a confusing number of liquids.

But I didn’t want to become an expert for sophisticated devices, and I just wanted to switch.

A new generation of e-cigarettes came onto the market

Then I heard that a new model called Juul was to be launched on the German market from the USA. These devices no longer had to be filled with liquid, but you plugged a finished Pod into the beautifully designed battery, smoked it empty and could then exchange it for a new one.

The mixing ratio is always the same with such devices, and the consumer doesn’t have to worry about mouthpieces, ohm numbers, or other technical bells and whistles.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a shop selling these new e-cigarettes from the USA for weeks.

Instead, a German tobacco company went onto the market with its own device based on the Juu principle.

I bought this device and my first pods.

I haven’t smoked a conventional cigarette since that day (except one evening when I was drunk, I must admit).

The financial aspect

Today I only spend about half the money on smoking. I had smoked 25 cigarettes a day, and a pack of 21 costs 6 €.

Today I get along with a Liquid-Pod for one day and a box contains two pods for 6,95€.

Also, you have to add the purchase price for the device of 26€. I bought two of them so that I can continue smoking when I run out of electricity in one device.

But I had compensated the 52 € acquisition costs in less than a month.

The health effects

It took only a few days until my morning sputum became less. Today it has completely disappeared.

Even the smoker’s cough is gone. My lung function has noticeably improved, and I have regularly been jogging again for half a year.

But the nicotine addiction is still there. There are three types of pods — 18 mg, 9 mg, and 0 mg nicotine, but I am still at 18 mg. However, I have to say that I did not intend to quit smoking because of the change. I just wanted to minimize my health risks.

So if I wanted to, I could reduce it to 9 mg first and then 0 mg later.

For me, the change was a blessing. I haven’t breathed so freely in years.

In the long run, my health will benefit from the fact that I will no longer ingest tar or other solids with the smoke of conventional cigarettes. Also, all the carcinogenic substances in tobacco smoke are not contained in the E-Liquid according to previous knowledge.

Thoughts on the long-term effects

I, too, have heard of the deaths in the USA that have apparently been caused in the recent past by the consumption of e-cigarettes.

However, according to a recent media report, the experts agree that such cases cannot occur in Germany.

Since the cases would have occurred within a short period and especially among adolescents exclusively in the USA, this speaks for an acute problem on the US market but has nothing to do with long-term effects.

The problem concerns self-mixing liquids that are hardly controlled.

In the product I use, all the ingredients are documented and reported to the authorities. Doctors still recommend the e-cigarette, on the one hand, to quit smoking and on the other side as a less harmful substitute for smokers who cannot or do not want to stop.

However, care must be taken to ensure that all e-cigarettes and liquids are not sold to minors.

Because even if e-cigarettes are a genuine and healthier alternative for long-term smokers, they are also suitable for young people as an entry drug.

To deter young people from smoking must, therefore, continue to have the highest priority.

Smoking is not cool at all, even if it may seem so as a young person. In the long run, it kills you anyway.
