What The Rachel Zegler Teaches Us About Cancel Culture
And Why It Is So Important To Take Notice Of It

I appreciate this is my second blog about cancel culture however, with Rachel Zegler dominating the media, I feel like it is hard to ignore her case.
Rachel has made the media after stating that the original Snow White is outdated and her remake will modernise the story. She has met nothing but criticism from those who state she should not try to discredit the old version and have called her non-feminist.
When the criticism first hit the media, I was shocked.
Was it not only a few years ago that the whole world was insulting the original Snow White? Did the whole world not band together to say it was outdated to encourage men to kiss females while sleeping or without clear consent?
If you look back to articles from 2021, the world openly criticised the lessons that Snow White taught children. They argued that children need to be taught healthy lessons from a young age and that Snow White contracted values they wanted instilled into their children.

So many people agreed with this that Disney even went as far as changing a ride in Disney World which depicted the same kiss, bowing to the wishes of the public. Not only that, but they have also acknowledged their racist, sexist and problematic depiction of different races, genders and sexes that before each Disney film, it comes with a small warning to alert the viewer that these decisions are unacceptable and outdated.
So after such a protest, why now is it that when Rachel mirrors these opinions, she has been ostracized and why is this?
Not because people do not agree with her, but because they have taken a dislike to her.
I am not arguing that these changes are not improvements, however, I would like to point out how quickly the world forgets their outcries when someone they choose to dislike preaches the same morals.
Cancel culture seems to be gunning for Rachel but not actually for any crime, which shows the extent of injustice that cancel culture can cause. Rachel has not killed, hurt, stolen or committed any offence, but by expressing an opinion, has gained a mob of people demanding her head.
Newspaper headlines are designed in such a way that they support the general public’s views, clearly desperate to sell articles and hoping to attack the majority, even at the detriment of a young lady simply trying to make a career.
On top of this, no one condemned a modernised version of Snow White when Chris Hemsworth, oh-so-popular Thor, took the mantle of the Huntsman, changing the character and giving him a larger story than that of the animation. They did not complain when Kristen Stewart played a Snow White which led an army. Or when Lily Collins and Julia Roberts created a quirky fun version, which turned the prince into a blubbering idiot (great film, by the way!).
But no, Rachel Zegler is the first actress to be part of a Snow White which is so different, so offensive to the original, that she deserves a mob after her. The only thing that seems to be majorly different from that of its counterparts is that Rachel Zegler is the first woman of colour to take on the fictional role, make of that what you will.
The only thing we can say for sure is that the contradictory manner of the public regarding this case should highlight the issues with cancel culture. One year the world can agree with you and the next people will condemn you, not because they do not agree but because they would rather dismiss their own values than agree with someone they do not like.
