What the Minneapolis Riots Say About Us

Another day and another injustice has happened to the black community in the United States. The murder of George Floyd by the police department in Minneapolis is another indication that we have not learned anything from our past.
Injustices keep happening, and the black community keeps suffering. There is no justification for the force used by the police department on this man over a $20 bill. There is no justification at any time for the heavy-handed response of police departments around the United States for some of the petty crimes that are being committed. It comes down to racism and discrimination against the black community. There is no other reason why this is occurring.
No Justification for Violent Police Responses
The job of the police department is to serve and protect. They are to serve and protect everyone, not just the white community. Far too often, we have witnessed a heavy-handed approach by these police departments when it comes to suspected black criminals. Everyone is entitled to due process under the law. We have a saying innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. You are not proven guilty on the streets by police officers who decide for whatever reason to use a heavy-handed approach to suspected criminals. This is not what police officers do.
It appears that racism still exists in many police departments around the country. It is not going to bring communities together when we have supposed “law enforcement” officers behaving in this manner. Far too often, we’ve seen in black men and women gunned down in the streets when this didn’t have to occur. Regardless of whether or not someone has committed a crime, they must be treated in the proper fashion.
Police officers are within their right to defend themselves if they are under some sort of threat from a criminal or there’s a weapon involved, but a lot of the time, there are no weapons. The people being arrested are completely defenseless. Police today are also equipped with numerous non-violent means to subdue criminals. It’s only in the most extreme circumstances that lethal weapons should be used. Far too often, this is the default response by police officers. If they are not being shot, the officers are either punching, kicking them, or assaulting them. They are committing they very acts people get arrested for! Perhaps they should arrest themselves.
This isn’t to say that every police officer is responsible for these acts as they clearly are not, but it’s happening far too often. I don’t know what sort of training these officers are given, but it’s clearly not working. The police should be there to support and keep their communities peaceful. In today’s society, the police are helping to foster resentment, hatred, and outright fear. You cannot grow a vibrant community when the police have such a heavy-handed response.
Why the Riots Happened
Of course, I can’t justify riots either. We have to look at why the riot actually happened. It happened because of the murder of a black man. These murders happen far too often. Today, there is huge inequality in the black community. This has existed for a long time, and it’s just getting worse.
There is poverty, hopelessness, despair, drug abuse, and other problems in the community. This is the reason why crimes happen. People become desperate, and they do desperate things. We cannot allow our black communities to be neglected any longer. They’ve lived with this poverty and hopelessness for far too long. We allow our inner cities to fester and rot and do nothing to help the people that live there.
Why do we act so shocked when these people are lash out at their oppressors? I’m not shocked at all when I see riots happen. I saw them in the early 90s when I was a young kid during the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles. When my sisters were small, they lived through the Watts Riots in the 1960s. The oppression of the black community is the reason for riots.
The black community has lived through some of the most horrific things I can imagine. They lived through being slaves. They were then lynched and murdered by the Ku Klux Klan simply for the fact that they were black. After that came segregation, atrocities, and indignities against their communities. Don’t act so surprised when these people rise up against their oppressors. I don’t support riots, looting, and destruction of personal property, but I understand why it happens.
Change Now
It is time to change the way we treat human beings. After all, that is what a black person is, isn’t it? This is a human being. The color of their skin might be different, but underneath they still are human beings. Blood still pumps in their body, they have emotions, feelings, and they want to be treated just like anyone else. They want a chance at dignity and a decent quality of life. They want their families to be happy. They want to live without poverty, hopelessness, and despair. They’re tired of being beat down and oppressed and then told it’s their own fault.
It is time to treat everyone exactly the same. We are all human beings. It’s time we started acting like actual human beings. We have a LONG WAY TO GO!
