Summary

Beer salt is a product used to enhance the flavor of beer by reducing carbonation and bitterness, and its presence in supermarkets has become more noticeable following the legalization of full-strength beer sales.

Abstract

The author of the web content, surprised by the unexpected appearance of "Beer salt" in the supermarket's beverage aisle, embarks on a quest to understand its purpose. Initially confused about whether it's a salt to be added to beer, a byproduct of beer, or merely beer-themed, the author finds that beer salt is indeed intended for addition to beer. This product, available in plain and lime flavors, is designed to lessen the carbonation and bitterness of beer. The author's realization that this is the first summer where supermarkets can sell full-strength beer suggests a correlation between the availability of beer salt and changes in beer sales regulations.

Opinions

  • The author expresses surprise and a sense of novelty regarding the appearance of beer salt in supermarkets.
  • There is a hint of frustration or bemusement at the supermarket's assumption that all customers are familiar with beer salt.
  • The author's investigation into beer salt indicates a personal curiosity and a desire to clarify its purpose for themselves and potentially other consumers.
  • The mention of the first summer of full-strength beer sales in supermarkets implies a connection between this change and the emergence of beer salt as a mainstream product.

What the Heck Is Beer Salt?

The supermarket assumed I knew

It’s been a while since I shopped inside a supermarket, but I didn’t expect entirely new foods to appear! In the beverage aisle, above the stacked cases of beer, were shelf displays of “Beer salt”.

I had no idea if it was salt you put in your beer, or salt made out of beer, or salt with no relation to beer at all except that the salt shaker was in the shape of a beer bottle.

The supermarket was no help. They assumed everyone knew why they’d want to buy it. Plain or lime flavored.

I looked it up. You add it to beer, to get rid of carbonation and bitterness.

How did I never see it before?

Then it hit me. This is the first summer since supermarkets could sell full-strength beer.
