What should I do to give up an addiction?

I hear addiction is like choking every single day. It surrounds you. Eating at what you love, and what you need like a poison sucking up your blood. At least, this is applied to drug abuse. Not every addiction is a self sacrificing kind. There are healthy addictions and non healthy addictions.
Its picking what addictions are becoming harmful for your life that is the hard part. Due to addiction being a need not a want its hard to determine where it starts to ruin your life because half the time a person is absorbed in needing the addiction. However, there are healthy addictions that allow us to continue to live a normal life without it being harmful to us.
“There are all kinds of addicts, I guess. We all have pain. And we all look for ways to make the pain go away. (107)” ― Sherman Alexie, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
Understanding the kind of addiction
Just like learning how to ride a bike we need to make sense of our own addictions. Before you decide if you should give up an addiction you must first understand what the addiction is doing to you.Which is the same reason why we start with training wheels when it comes to riding a bike. We need to understand what the bike is doing before we can ride it on our own.
An addiction can effect both the physical and mental aspects of a person. But not every addiction can provide a physical issue. Just as not every addiction is bad. The real question is if the addiction is mentally deterring you from being a better person today.
Good addictions can stem from eating healthy, obsessing over your passion, and exercising. Where as bad addictions can be drugs, internet, sex, and any other kind that makes your personality turn negative. Bad addictions enslave you like they own you.
“The three most harmful addictions are heroin, carbohydrates, and a monthly salary.” ― Nassim Nicholas Taleb
1. Drug addictions

I’m going to start with the worst and most common of addictions. Drugs. We have multiple types and multiple reasons why each specific drug is bad. But lets start with the less deadly and work our way to the most deadly shall we?
The thing you don’t know is the least deadly drug addiction is to weed. Weed is a plant that people smoke which can make a person feel funny or happy. Such a drug has major premise to become addicted but for such a happy go lucky drug there are extreme withdrawals. I can tell you first hand from witnessing people go through the withdrawal that there is a breaking point. But not a death point.
The breaking point is when a person needs it to sustain a living. Sleep deprivation, lack of an appetite, and mood swings are often cause of drug dependence with weed.
On the contrary there is medical health gains from this plant. Thus the drug should not be illegal just watched over as people tend to abuse the use of it. Unlike other drugs it will never kill you.
Alcohol and ciggerates are our legal killers

Our society has a cruel way of making our addictions legal that can kill us. Its counter intuitive but its great to keep the population from over populating. If you think about people would be less likely to do these drugs if they were illegal and in the end it would make us over populate. Over population has been an issue with china. China populates the amount of children a family has and the genders they can have. Eventually we would fall into the same rift if we didn’t have killers.
Cigs and Alcohol have the same symptoms for withdrawal. They are anger, depression, shakes, and a negative attitude. These are what we call the blind killers. No one sees death coming until they are in their forties and find out of they have cancer or liver failure from these addictions.
“Some very considerable part of the gestural language of public places that had once belonged to cigarettes now belonged to phones.” ― William Gibson, Zero History
The illegal killers sweeping our deaths by storm
Heroine, Molly, cocaine, and psychedelics are sweeping our country into a death match. Its all over the news. All over our house holds, families, and schools. People are developing addictions to drugs that can kill them in a snap of a finger.
Our government came up with narcan as a solution for overdoses. The problem with narcan is that most that get it don’t have to sign a insurance that they will stop using. Due to this we see the same people overdosing and expecting narcan to save their life.
Illegal killers are the drugs that make your life into a living nightmare. You will do anything for them, and anything could mean living on the streets.
2. Anything not drug related
Don’t be alarmed. There are several other types of emotional and physical addictions that don’t belong to drugs. Cellphone use, and internet addiction are two of the common issues as of our current era.
Other addictions can range from pleasure, health, and passions we have.
But any addiction is a need not a want. I’m addicted to writing just like I am addicted to reading. In the end the only way to end addiction is to cold turkey it or start to lean away from it. Read up on the addiction and clearly figure out what and who it is harming.
