What rhymes with…?
Written by a 73-year-old child in the making

When the streetlights flicker It’s come to that time To stop what you’re doing Make time to be mine
I’m not going out tonight Believe me that’s true I didn’t die young Now I live just for you
It’s the dumbest poem ever But it will always rhyme It’s been written for you Because this is our time
The more years that pass Your beauty I cannot define When I think I’m losing love You always throw me a line
I know all that we are feeling It would make a very fine book But how can I concentrate When you give me that saucy look
Sleepy eyes on an angel’s face We cuddle up then say grace We’ve had our close ones But we’re at the next best place
You still will wag your finger Your eyes will sometimes flame I regret my utter selfishness Love is more than a simple game
A child could write this poem Better than Jack or Jill A nursery poem rhymes I’m that same child still
Gold on your fingers Bells on your toes The love we have Deepens and grows
I got no power left Only left with shame But I’m doing all right When you call out my name
We are not used to the cold It stiffens our older bones We argue over nothing Sometimes its traffic cones
We walk on icy sidewalks Staring down at unsteady feet Holding hands we move along Our faces wet with sleet
Yes, I forget to brush my teeth Put a comb through my hair I won’t get away with that Before I’m sent upstairs
I don’t know why you stick around Hit the streets and then explode You always end up laughing When I come running down the road
I’ve been doing too much drinking And things I don’t dare to say You’re not one for complaining Telling me it’s one of those days
Now I finally got the time No more questions in my book Except this, why the older you get The more amazing you look
I’ll take my nursery rhyme to bed I’ll read it to you tonight We’ll make passionate love And wait till morning to fight
