What No One Told You About Constantly Moving From One Country To Another
It’s hard to find stability as an immigrant. Usually, if you come from an undeveloped country, your immigration is an obligation to get a better life. But unfortunately, finding a new place you can call home requires time and effort. As a result, you experience a lot of instability.
I remember a couple of years ago when I was constantly moving. Travelling was fun. So was the sense of innovation and making new friends in each place.
But the sense of loss got worse every time I had to move again. The goodbye parties were harsh. The realization that you might never see the faces of the people who made you happy in that city was painful. Starting from scratch in each new place drains your energy.
You may hate a city before loving it
The city you love today might be one you resisted for a long time. When you move to a new country, there is always that itch of resistance to start your new life. So you begin to resent the new place you’re living in because it’s pushing you to get out of your comfort zone.
After doing the work of getting out of your comfort zone, you realize that the city you hated starts feeling like home. You understand that flexibility and adaptability are keys to survival.
You become a different version of yourself in each city where you live
All our experiences shape us in some way.
When you move to a new country, you will experience new places, people, and situations that will transform a part of yourself. Without noticing, you will begin to feel and be different. Maybe you will change your style according to the citizen trends of that country. Moreover, you will experience astonishing moments. For example, you might fall in love or have your best job experience in that new city.
Experiencing all those moments will create an emotional connection with the place where you live.
The treasure you will find in the city you call home
Sometimes deciding where you want to live takes you more time than you realize. You might live in a loop for a while, moving from place to place frantically. But the location you call home is the one that you will know deeply: the metro stations, the best areas, the best coffee places, and bars.
More importantly, you will find peace and stability in that city.
One day the realization will hit you.
It’s okay if you don’t know now where you want to live for your entire life. One day, you will know.
Maybe you will see your city from the heights of a rooftop, or you will be laughing with your friends in the street down your house, and you will say to yourself: all the search was worth it, and no one is taking me out of here.
