IT operations professionals need to adapt their skills to the age of cloud technologies, agile applications and DevOps. Because software engineers have advanced considerably in IT processes such as procurement, container arrangement and configuration management to provide more value. This has enabled disciplines like SRE to be a guide for software engineers more than IT professionals:). Because their skills and experience are invaluable, it is imperative that IT operation-oriented individuals follow this path as well. In a world of cloud, containers and serverless technologies, operational skills will always remain essential.
New technologies do not override IT roles. But operating these technologies requires different roles and skills than those established when the entire IT infrastructure is built within the data center.
For IT professionals, product development colleagues and users to be productive, there must be experts who can understand the nuances of basic technology and the complexity attached to it.
As the company evolves into DevOps and agile models, the option to participate in cross-functional or specialist support roles must also be provided. These skills can be divided into the areas of agile/interdisciplinary applications, automation, cloud operations, monitoring, platform operations and service delivery. New roles are cloud architect, cloud engineer, automation architect/automation engineer and platform engineer. New roles and skills are needed to support the evolving responsibilities of IT operation in the modern era.
The best way to see the role of IT in the new age is to look at it from a service and product-oriented perspective, not a technology-based one. Today, IT operations teams will be less and more involved with creating a “build infrastructure” and managing intermediation, activation and services, and will remain standing, which can be product-oriented rather than technology-based.
