What Minimalism Helped Me Realise: A Journey of Simplicity

You don’t need to sell all of your possessions to become a minimalist

Adopt a minimalist lifestyle

As a 30+ year-old father of three beautiful girls, life used to be a whirlwind of chaos, possessions, and commitments. It was easy to get lost in the noise of modern life. Trying to juggle family, friends, clubs, school, work all gets in the way of what truly matter… Enjoying yourself.

The moment we stop focusing on the things that don’t really matter, the sooner we can start enjoying the ride.

I keep it simple, these 4 things are key to it all.

1. Relationships: Quality Over Quantity

Before embracing minimalism, my life was cluttered with social obligations, superficial connections, and digital distractions. I thought more friends and a busier social calendar equaled happiness. Minimalism helped me see that it’s the depth and authenticity of relationships that truly matter.

I’ve learned to focus on nurturing a few close friendships, both with my fellow parents and my daughters. By investing quality time and attention into these relationships, we’ve created deeper bonds and lasting memories. Minimalism has taught me that time spent with loved ones is more valuable than fleeting interactions, and it’s okay to say no to activities that don’t align with our family values.

I cut off a large % of people in my life. I did this by simply stopping to be the one who reached out. The results were eye-watering and very sobering.

2. Diet: Mindful Eating for Health

As a parent, convenience often took precedence over healthy eating. Takeaway foods were quick solutions to hectic schedules. Minimalism opened my eyes to the importance of mindful eating. I realised that our bodies are like cars. They need the right fuel to keep going and they need regularly serviced.

If we put the wrong fuel in our cars, the quicker they stop working.

Now, we don’t always each together as a family. Sunday’s and the odd Friday but I personally take on most of the cooking and I use it as a form of meditation.

3. Exercise: Prioritising Wellness

Minimalism prompted me to reevaluate my approach to exercise. I used to view it as a chore, something to squeeze into an already busy day. Minimalism taught me that movement should be a source of joy and vitality, not just a means to an end.

You don’t need a gym membership to keep fit.

I involve my daughters in physical activities that we all enjoy, whether it’s going out for a walk, helping them with dancing (although I am terrible) or climbing hills, we’ve learned to prioritise our well-being and make time for exercise without overcomplicating it. Minimalism has shown me that staying active can be a simple and enjoyable part of our daily lives.

4. Owning Fewer Possessions: Finding Freedom in Simplicity

The most profound realisation that minimalism has brought into my life is the value of owning fewer possessions. In a world that encourages consumerism and accumulation, minimalism has shown me that true freedom lies in simplicity.

With three growing girls, it’s tempting to buy everything they desire, from toys to clothes. However, I’ve learned that excess possessions only add clutter and stress to our lives. By adopting a minimalist mindset, we focus on acquiring items that truly serve a purpose and bring us joy.

We’ve decluttered our home, keeping only what is essential and meaningful. This has not only reduced the physical clutter but also created a more serene and organised environment for our family. Minimalism has taught me that by letting go of the unnecessary, we make space for what truly matters.

In Short

Minimalism has been a transformative journey. It has helped me realise that life is more meaningful when we prioritise quality relationships over quantity, nourish our bodies with mindful eating, find joy in exercise, and simplify our possessions.

Minimalism has taught me that simplicity is not about deprivation but about focusing on what truly matters. By embracing this way of life, I’ve found greater fulfillment, stronger family bonds, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of the present moment. In a world that often pulls us in countless directions, minimalism has allowed me to find clarity, purpose, and the peace that comes with living a simpler, more intentional life.
