What masks can say about us
Are you smiling behind yours?
My collection is small but cheery. Sunflowers. Bold blooming peonies. Large white polkadots popped on black. This is my way of adding a bit of character to my largely hidden small face.
Eyes may be telling, but it’s our now covered smiles that capture our essence. So I opt for masks that offer a hint of personality.
Is it cavalier? Inappropriate? A tasteless fashion statement during such serious times?
I don’t think so. Not if it brings a smile under our mask. Not if it brings us a chuckle when we grab it on our way out the door.
Even the most devastating crisis can be a tool to remind us of what’s important. Staying connected with loved ones. A random act of kindness. Feeling grateful for our good fortunes.
So laugh out loud when you can. Smile even when others can’t see it. Wear a face covering that makes you feel alive.
Yes, wearing a mask is to protect the spread of a horrific virus. As those of us with compromised immune systems are very aware, to disregard its severity is literally to risk our lives.
This pandemic will leave a generation marked by loss.
It will NOT mask my love for life, hide my small joys, coerce me into disguise.
