What Life Looks Like Living In A National Park
The beauty of living in Jasper, Canada

Living in a National Park sounds like a dream and to be honest, most of the time it was. Waking up to the view of the mountains, serene lakes within walking distance, and being surrounded by an abundance of trees and forests.
It felt like living in a bubble away from the craziness of reality.
I was lucky to live in Jasper National Park for 7 months and while I did face many hardships there, being immersed in nature eased the pain.
It was such a unique experience to be able to live in such an environment. So please allow me to paint a picture of what living in a National Park entailed.
Mountains
I can’t talk about Jasper without first mentioning the mountains. It was so nice to be able to walk around and see mountains everywhere. It felt as though I was living in a postcard.
My personal favorite mountain was Pyramid Mountain.

When you see the shape you can understand why her name is Pyramid. This mountain is so distinct and beautiful and often is embellished with low-hanging clouds that add to her mystical effect.
There are also many other mountains surrounding Jasper, including Signal and Whistler to name a few.
Some of these mountains are closed off during the winter as it becomes too treacherous to hike there, but during the spring they begin to open up for hikers again.
For the people who love to ski and snowboard, there is a place to do this called Marmot Basin. There are many slopes there that cater to all levels of expertise and the view from the top is breathtaking. The ski season goes from November to May.
Lakes

Another one of Jasper's attractions is the lakes. There are many lakes in Jasper, most of which you are able to walk around. During the winter when the lakes freeze over you are able to ice skate too.
There is one particular lake called Lake Mildred, which gets transformed, into an ice skating rink during the winter.
During the summer when the ice melts, it is common for people to go kayaking or canoeing on the lakes. There are a few lakes that have a boathouse that rent out kayaks and canoes so there is no need to worry if you don’t have your own!
The lakes are so picturesque and serene. A stroll around a lake is sure to soothe even the busiest of minds.
Seasons
During my 7 months in Jasper, I was fortunate enough to see the seasons change. That is one thing about Canada; the change of seasons is so dramatic.
One minute you see greenery and clear blue waters and the next everything is covered by a thick blanket of snow and the lakes are completely frozen over.

It’s no lie what they say about Canada. The winters really are incredibly cold. The temperature can drop to -34 degrees Celsius and you have to wrap up really warm to avoid getting sick.

Then during the summer after the snow and ice have melted away, you get to see nature in a whole new light. Everything looks completely different and the temperature can get very warm.
That’s the beauty of Canada it is worth revisiting the same spot again during a different season because you won’t feel like you are seeing the same place.
Wildlife

Another thing about the change in seasons is all the wildlife that begin to come out of hibernation. During all seasons you will see elk, deer, and even moose if you are lucky.
It’s during the spring that the bears awaken. You don’t want to get too close to them but seeing them from the distance is a treat. You can often see them with their cubs and they are so cute.
You do have to be careful when living or visiting a National Park with animals because there are seasons when they are more aggressive.
On my second day in Jasper, an elk charged at a few friends and myself and it was pretty scary. I thought my life in Jasper would be like the Hunger Games where I would be fending for my life every day.
Luckily that incident was a one-off and was a very rare case as the animal approached us unprovoked. Too many times tourists have tried to get a picture of an animal and ended up riling the animal up, so it’s important to be respectful of the wildlife and to let them be. After all, it is their environment.
Town

The town of Jasper itself is quite small and quaint, but perfect if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of a city.
There are souvenir shops and places to buy native art and mementos. There are also a few great cafés and restaurants to enjoy after a day of hiking.
My favorite café is Sunhouse, a place that has great food and a beautiful view of the town and mountains.
Jasper is a really beautiful place to live in and visit even just for a few days.
Jasper is the physical manifestation of what you expect when you picture Canada in your mind. It has it all from the beautiful nature to the peaceful town and the exciting wildlife.
I definitely recommend adding Jasper to your list if you are planning to visit Canada.
Being able to live there was an experience unlike any other I have had and I am so grateful that I was able to do so.
There’s nothing like daily nature immersion to melt your stresses away.
