What Kind of Boss Would You Like?
There is a lot of buzz about the ‘great resignation’. Our bosses play a key role in deciding how happy we are at work. What if we could send them a wish list?
What kind of boss would you like? The relationship with your boss may be one of the most important relationships you’ll have outside of your family. The better your boss is, the happier you are likely to be at work. And the more content you are at work, the more satisfied you are in other aspects of life.
So, what kind of boss would you like? Let’s draw up a wish list. This is what people look for in you to all the bosses out there.
- Someone I can talk to
Most people would like a boss that they can talk to. They want someone who will listen and not judge them. A boss is not my therapist, but it needs to be someone I can talk to.
Someone who understands me and what I am going through. Personal life affects work and vice versa. A good boss needs to acknowledge and be understanding.
- Makes me feel protected
People want to feel protected at work. We need someone who will help us feel safe in the ever-changing world. We hope our boss can keep up with the changes and ensure that we are safe while working.
A good boss needs to make us feel safe from organizational politics so we can focus on the task at hand. A good boss always has our back.
- My biggest cheerleader
Most people want a boss that is their biggest cheerleader. We want someone who believes in us and our abilities. Someone who will push us to do better and be the best we can be.
We want someone who’ll be as happy as we are during success and help pick ourselves back up during failures.
- Give me insights into the big picture
People want their boss to give them insights into the big picture. We want someone who can help us understand what is happening in our company and how it affects us. Someone who can help us see the future and plan for it.
- Tells me the truth
People want their boss to tell them the truth. We don’t want someone to sugarcoat things or tell us what we want to hear. We want someone who is honest and upfront with us.
Someone who will give it to us straight, no beating around the bush.
- Allows me to fail trying to do the right thing
People want to know that they are allowed to fail. We don’t want someone to micromanage us and watch our every move. We want someone who trusts us enough to let us try and make mistakes.
Someone who knows that we will learn from them and grow as a result.
- Delegates and trusts
People want their boss to delegate and trust. We want someone who will help us grow as a company. Someone who will be a team player and help us grow as individuals.
And most importantly, we want someone who trusts us to do our job right.
- Encourages to work with their peers
Some people want their boss to encourage them to work with their peers. They want someone who will help get more exposure to other leaders in the company.
They take pride when their employees outgrow them and move up. They want to be known as someone who helped groom the company’s next leaders.
- Takes pride in helping others
Some bosses take pride in helping their employees grow. They want to see their employees succeed and be the best they can be. These bosses are rare, but they are out there. They help their employees learn and develop new skills that will help them in the future.
This is what people look for in you to all the bosses out there. What are you doing to make sure your employees are happy and productive?
