Take a trip with me down memory lane
Just over a year ago I decided to begin my online income journey. I had nothing to start with except the need to provide for my two nephews Marcus 10 and Marcelino is 8.
I became legal guardian to them this past April after caring for them for over 6 years.
The reason that I’m starting this post with them is because they are my why.
We all have our own reasons for creating a successful life.
What is your fuel?
Having these two boys to take care of makes my focus a bit easier. A bit sharper.
I believe that if you can find your “why”, then when the going gets tough you can remember your why and press on.
What’s your motivational fuel?
Choosing A Path And Keep Going
I had been doing ok providing for us right up until Covid hit.
We were in a house and going to school. Doing what we all did, living and enjoying life.
After the first 5 months of lock down, our landlord was forced to sell our house and we were displaced. We had no way to find a new apartment because no one was allowed to go anywhere.
Eventually we made it into our own place again. Only things were different this time.
High prices and living arrangements annihilated my savings.
Something had to change.
Working Through The Confusion
I began to look for a new path. My options were few due to health issues so I did what most everyone does…I Googled!!
I looked up everything that promised pay. And there was a lot to look up.
I researched and joined many different platforms with no luck because I wasn’t familiar with any of the processes needed to succeed online.
I joined Clickbank. Great its free and has lots of products to promote.
Promote.
That was where I got lost. I had no idea how to promote anything or where to do it.
Finding The Answers I Was Looking For
That’s when I came across an article about Wealthy Affiliate.
If you are not familiar with them, Wealthy Affiliate is a training platform for online entrepreneurship. It is based on blogging.
I read the review which included sections about how blogging is a way to get traffic with the least amount of investment.
Right up my broke alley!
Just from the article I began to grasp the idea of how to put eyes on a product or service.
Now I had to figure out what blogging is and how to do it.
The article also mentioned that it had a free starter membership.
Again, “free” being right up my alley.
I am a realist so I know that more often than not, you get what you paid for.
But I was willing and needing to get some guidance or I was going nowhere, and fast.
So, I joined and was immediately amazed at what they had to offer.
I learned how to design and build my first website.
I learned what blogging was.
I learned the basics for becoming an affiliate marketer through blogging.
Understanding The Promoting Part
And then they came to promoting. My head began to spin trying to figure out which platform or strategy would be best for me.
I joined all that I could find and had very limited success.
Each platform required a slightly different approach than others and some were completely different.
Facebook looked like wall to wall spammers. That is not my style and I wanted nothing to do with it. But I will revisit Facebook.
Then I tried LinkedIn. I really enjoyed this one because there was a lot of positive engagement. But I couldn’t gain any traction…yet.
I remembered back a few years, to a conversation that I had with a very intelligent man. I often picked his brain for all kinds of information about all kinds of subjects.
After a while he told me that I should just join Quora and ask them all of my questions. So I did.
It was so much fun and I learned a great deal. But I wasn’t using it in any kind of focused way. It stuck with me how helpful it was.
I decided to delve back in, except this time I had a kind of path to follow. Learn and grow.
Finding The Answers I Was Looking For
As I said, i was a little bit more familiar with Quora but I hadn’t set up a profile or created any spaces yet.
I got to work learning about my craft and as I set up my profile and created my first space…”Stephen’s Let’s Discuss Affiliate Marketing”, I began to understand how I could promote my content.
Believe me, I was still very much stumbling around. Asking questions that to most people were inane and already answered.
So I learned how to pose my questions better. This also taught me how to hone my research as well.
Then I received an answer from Deon Christie that was polite, and not dismissive.
His answer had more information than I was trying to gain. He covered what I was going to ask next. He showed proof.
But the thing that resonated most was that he responded to my comments.
Maybe he saw something in me, but he began to guide me to answers from people that he knew weren’t going to offer b.s.
It turns out that he is a traffic driving juggernaut. And a master at audience engagement.
His suggestions led me here to Medium.
The Power Of Medium
I have to admit something right here and right now.
Medium intimidates me.
There, i said it.
The reason, I think, is that Medium is filled to the brim with professional writers and I’m just getting started.
I have a great deal of respect for the people who find success here.
The reason that I decided to jump in with this post is that I read an article here (please forgive me for not being savvy enough yet to cite the author) this morning that inspired me to write.
The article was about “what’s next after reaching 100 followers?” I just hit 100 yesterday. The author was saying that you just need to write, even if its an “About me" post.
I said to myself, “I can do this!”
So here we are.
Find Your Why Conclusion
To wrap up I’ll say, if you can find a “Why" then you can find a way!!
I appreciate the opportunity to express myself and if you have any tips or guidance please leave them in the comments and we can discuss them.
Thanks for listening,
Stephen
