What I’ve Learned Living In A Small Town
It’s not all orchids and roses

It was December 2018. My house had just surprisingly sold and the new owner wanted us out by the end of the month.
Our original plan had been to sell the house in May or later and “retire” to a life of RV travel. The RV in question was sitting in a camp area in a rural setting just outside the big city. Our plans changed and we moved to the sticks.
Life had been good there. People are mostly friendly, for the most part, and have been very welcoming. We’ve made several new friends in our neighborhood.
But after we returned from our big trip in the fall of 2019, things started to change, and not for the better. “The Election” was approaching and the area we had moved to was very much pro-Trump. Seeing as how we were the opposite politically this fact was not lost on us. What we didn’t expect was the vitriol and hatred coming from our neighbors who had welcomed us with open arms 18 months earlier.
Even after the November elections, we still see a very toxic atmosphere. We’ve managed to meet up with some other liberal-minded people in the area and we all feel that living here is fraught with educational peril.
Wait! What the hell did I just write? “Educational peril?”
What we have found is a huge hatred for the new president and constant regurgitation of propaganda and false facts that became prevalent during the election of 2020. It seems to me that many of the people we encounter have no desire to have any civil discourse about anything relevant to current events and an equal lack of desire to expand their mind with learning. They are content to rile up the masses and “own the libs” with constant trolling and, as I alluded to earlier, a toxic atmosphere.
But at what cost?
The neighborhood we live in has a private page on a social media outlet. The page is designed to share information about the neighborhood and events of interest to the residents. However, a few of the “trolls” have decided they need to constantly post hate memes about the new President and then cry about First Amendment rights when they are asked to stop. The problem is acerbated by the group admins who have also contributed to the toxicity.
It’s gotten to a point that we no longer want to be a part of the neighborhood, even though there are still some very nice people there.
It is distressing to realize that our society is not cordial or social. If one has differences in opinion, instead of civil discourse we find hate and ostracizing. We’ve honestly tried to talk and understand their positions and give our opinions with the facts to back our beliefs to no avail.
I honestly don’t know where to go from here.
