What I’ve Earned by Writing 300 Medium Articles

Yesterday, I published my 300th Medium article. That’s quite a milestone, so it’s a good time to take stock of what I’ve gained from writing so much, both monetarily and personally.

All the stats I’m going to talk about correspond to those at the date I’m writing this article, i.e. June 11. But it won’t be published for another ten days or so (yes, I always try to stay ahead of the game), so they won’t be up to date, even if they don’t change drastically.

My Earnings

I’ve always been a blogger, and before writing on Medium, I had my own website where I was writing about Python programming. However, acquiring traffic was too hard and not worth the effort I was putting in. I’ve never earned $1 on my website.

However, when I switched to Medium, I was making money from the first month on the platform. And just for that, I’m quite happy.

I’ve earned $1825.83 before taxes for 300 articles in 10 months (1 article/day). I don’t subtract the money from referrals because if they subscribe to Medium using my link, it’s thanks to my articles. That’s approximately $6 an article. It’s not a lot, in my opinion. However, it’s not just the mean that needs to be considered, but also the variance. I have some articles that have brought in $100 and are still bringing in more every day, while other articles have only brought in a few crumbs.

By the way, it allows me to see which articles work best, and if I wanted to, I could restrict myself to writing only articles that make money. But that’s not what I’m looking for, I like to talk about anything and everything, not just trendy subjects.

The article that earned me more has earned me approximately $150 and is still getting views each day because it falls in first place on Google with some searches.

Today, even if I don’t do anything more, I’m still making money because my old articles are still getting views. That’s the advantage of having written 300 articles, even if each one only earns a penny a day, that’s still $3 in total.

My Views

In terms of views, I’m making approximately 15 000 views/month. Sometimes less, sometimes more.

My best month was 22,000 views, and my worst month was obviously when I started, with 1,000 views, which isn’t bad for a first month and gave me the motivation to keep going.

Nowadays, I get around 450 views a day without publishing anything new.

My Followers

So far, I’ve accumulated almost 1,000 subscribers. That’s 100 a month, which I find quite substantial, so thanks to you who support me by the way!

Some of these followers contact me privately to discuss my articles, give me advice, help me discover new things, etc… This is also a gain to be taken into account, as these people bring something to my life in their own way.

Among followers, there are also referrals and email subscribers. I don’t have a lot of referrals (5/month on average), and 10% of my followers are also email subscribers. Anyways, I rarely send my articles to my email subscribers to avoid spamming their mailboxes.

Collabs

For the past two months, some people have been contacting me to publish articles about their software, their tool, their project, etc…

For the past two months, some people have been contacting me to publish articles about their software, their tool, their project, etc…

I generally accept if I feel the product has something to contribute to my community, and so I’ve carried out several collaborations, and even though I didn’t ask for any money to write these “sponsored” articles, they enabled me to discover new things I didn’t know about and to benefit from certain advantages (promotional codes, beta testing, etc.).

Learning

Finally, from a personal point of view, it teaches me a lot to write articles. In fact, I do a lot of personal research and I’m constantly learning, reading a lot, etc… and generally, I share what I discover or learn through my articles.

Sometimes, I even learn new things just for the purpose of sharing them with my community.

It’s a way to strengthen my knowledge, share it, and also make some money along the way.

Final Note

When I started writing on Medium, I told myself that I would publish one article per day for a year to see what would come out of it in the end. I still have 65 articles left to fulfill this goal, but I am already happy with what I have achieved on this platform, and I am confident that I will manage to write these 65 articles.

And then? I will have to find a new goal for myself, we’ll see by then. In any case, writing 300 articles has already brought me a lot!
