What is ‘Wealth’?

I’m currently reading the book ‘The Millionaire Fastlane’ by MJ DeMarco, and I’ve learnt a few important lessons about money.

One of them being:

Being wealthy isn’t about how much money you have (or don’t have) in your bank account - its a mindset.

You can have millions of dollars in your bank account, but if you spend like a billionaire, you won’t have those millions for much longer.

It happens time and time again.

NBA star that earned millions of dollars per game declares bankruptcy 2 years later.

World famous boxer who earned $400 million throughout his career files for bankruptcy after retiring.

You’re probably thinking, “How is this even possible? If I had millions, all my problems would be solved!”.

But that is where you’re wrong. More money doesn’t solve problems, it only makes those problems bigger.

More often than not, the so-called “wealthy” people you see on the street or online with the designer bags, sports cars, and expensive watches are actually the ones that have no money.

Yes, they definitely have some sort of money to be spending on these things, but they’re only doing it because they lack the feeling of true wealth.

But they flaunt their money to give the illusion to both themselves and the people around them that they are in fact, really very super wealthy.

In other words, they spend money on material things to prove to themselves that they have wealth. Spending money and buying crap that they don’t need is a coping mechanism to distract themselves.

So what does true wealth look like?

Wealth is different for everybody. But the one common element that wealthy people have in common is freedom.

The freedom to travel anywhere in the world in a moment’s notice without having any repercussions to their business.

The freedom to take the day off work and spend it with the kids instead.

The freedom to learn a skill from the world’s best trainer.

And yes, some want the freedom to buy any material products that tickle their fancy.

You know you’re wealthy if you have calmness in your life and mind. No worries about how you’re going to afford the shiny new car. You can if you wanted to, but you won’t. You don’t need to prove anything to anyone.

Wealth is freedom. Freedom from instant gratification. Freedom from living someone else’s dream life. And freedom from others telling you what to do.

In your own life, ask yourself: Why am I chasing wealth? There is no right or wrong answer, but make sure your answer is a reflection of what you actually want in life, not an idea the media has put into your head.
