What is Prompt Engineering? Will it Last Long? Do We Need to Learn It?

Created with ChatGPT and MidJourney by author, described at the end of the post.

Last month I noticed many people mentioned “Prompt Engineering”, and I was also curious about how to create an image I want using MidJourney. The tools are available for everyone, but obtaining the most out of them is not easy. So the techniques around using those AI tools(giving correct instructions to interact with them and training them to respond better) become necessary. I wonder:

  1. The job market for the prompt engineer
  2. Will it last long?
  3. Do We Need to Learn It

1. The job market for the prompt engineer

There is some sort of scam posts or videos that popped up, saying using GPT to earn xxx dollars. There is news talking about how much a prompt engineer can earn. So I searched “prompt engineer” on Seek, Indeed, and LinkedIn, but I can’t find anyone looking for a prompt engineer yet, at least not in Australia. This post[1] mentioned, “Anthropic, an artificial intelligence safety and research company, currently has an open role for a “prompt engineer and librarian” with a salary range between $175,000 and $335,000, as first reported by Bloomberg.” You can check the job description on their website if you are interested.

It also claims the number of job listings on LinkedIn for prompt engineers is 15, not 708.

In my opinion, the skill is needed, for everyone, not for some prompt engineers, because AI tools are easy to access and no technical background is required.

2. Will it last long?

Some might say that AI keeps evolving, and we won’t need prompt engineering before long, but I think we will need it for a long time. There are two reasons.

First, we need it until AI can ask us questions instead of giving responses. Take seeing a doctor, for example; we can describe our feelings and discomfort. A better describer(prompt engineering) gets clear communication with the doctors. But most of the time, we need doctors to ask us questions to diagnose. They have access to medical knowledge and equipment. Now, ChatGPT or other medical-focused chatbots open the door to medical knowledge, and the doctors disappear. Are you sure you can diagnose by merely getting access to the knowledge? No, we need to learn the diagnosis process and what questions to ask.

Second, if the days come earlier than we think, AI will become AGI and can reason, our prompt engineering will also evolve to cope with the situation, and the task will become how to interact with AGI.

3. Do We Need to Learn It

Based on the previous thoughts, I believe everyone should learn prompt engineering to improve productivity and solve all sorts of problems. You might be interested in drawing but never have enough time to learn; now, you can explore Image Generation tools like MidJourney. You or your pet might go through a long, inefficient diagnosis process, but now you can learn how to ask GPT to better understand the illness, etc.

In short, there is no need to pursue a prompt engineering job, but study prompt engineering to solve our problems and fulfil our needs; most current AI tools are free. The problem is how to learn prompt engineering, which I am super interested in now.
