I am sure we all have moments in our lives that we enjoy thinking back upon, reliving them, and feeling uplifted. I know I do.

These moments can be experiences with people we love, with strangers, in nature, with ourselves or even something we observed and feel happy to recall.

If I had to state examples from my life, some of these occasions would be:

  • time spent with family and friends
  • memorable family events
  • memories of my son’s childhood
  • conversations with my mom
  • a special solo trip
  • the joy of tackling a tough assignment successfully
  • cooking
  • simply sitting in my living room and looking around me
  • a walk around the lake near our place
  • listening to a song
  • a movie that moved me

I could go on and on. Because when we begin to think about it, it becomes easy to remember and we start adding to the list. I believe it is the human tendency to hold happy memories in the mind.

During my childhood, my mom taught me a wonderful exercise for when I felt sad. She told me to think about and write down five incidents that make me happy, no matter what. The first one took me a little time. But the rest of it was easier. Simple situations that never fade. It is important to write this down because when we are sad or upset, it becomes difficult to think clearly.

I have this list readily available to look at when I feel low. It uplifts me instantly. To extend this exercise, I also have an album of photos that make me feel joyful.

See? The key to our happiness CAN be in our hands.

So, here is . . .
