What is “Love” to Me
From Supreme Love to Love that Comes in Small Gestures
First of all, thanks Mike Sansone for this prompt.
“One day you will ask me which is more important? My life or yours? I will say mine and you will walk away not knowing that you are my life.” ― Khalil Gibran
I can say I’m obsessed with this quote. I find it the most beautiful and powerful expression of love because it shows the highest degree of selflessness, devotion, and generosity.
It is my romanticized view of love, that supreme love that gives everything without expectations, a love involving sacrifices and compromise but without being experienced as such because it doesn’t feel painful, it doesn’t involve suffering or denial. That sacrificial love we’ve seen, for instance, in Romeo and Juliet or Cleopatra and Mark Antony’s stories.
(Just a quick note: I think the highest form of supreme love is the mother’s love, this love has no equal; this topic deserves more attention, so I may explore it further in another article).
Love that comes in small gestures
Now, down to earth… in the present world, in a more realistic view,
nothing says “I love you” to me like:
…a hug and a kiss when I come home from a long day …a handwritten note with words of love found on my desk …a small surprise gift with no special occasion …the invitation to spend some quality time together, doing something we both enjoy or trying something new …a massage or a cuddle on the couch …being waited at home with a home-cooked meal or a favorite snack …a helping hand with a task or a chore …a sincere apology and a promise to do better when things don’t go well …a compliment or praise even for the smallest achievement …a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on when I feel blue and down …a meaningful gesture or a ritual, cherishing our traditions and memories …a book, a song, or an article recommendation out of the blue …a photo or a video, capturing our precious moments and memories sent just because was randomly found on the phone.
