What is Entrepreneurship? Definition, Skills & Traits
Not as difficult as it sounds!
How many of you have dreamed of owning a café, or starting up your business ever since you were a child? I bet that majority of your answers would be, ME! Well, guess what? Same here. And you know what that means? That means that we have had an entrepreneurial mindset ever since we were kids.
Entrepreneurship, in layman’s terms, can be defined as the act of starting your own business, no matter how big or small it may be. You can start it with your own money or any investor’s, does not really matter because you will be called an entrepreneur, anyway. It also involves bearing risks and earning profits, and devising strategies to keep your business or businesses running.
Why Should You Choose Entrepreneurship?
Well, the answer to this question is simple. You can choose to be an entrepreneur because you will not only be doing yourself a favor but also will be opening job opportunities doors to many people in need out there. And of course, becoming an entrepreneur also means that you are now contributing to your country’s economy and trying to boost it.
Example:
Entrepreneurs are most commonly called innovators because they always come up with unique business ideas. Even if the business exists in the market, the way they choose to brand and market it is what makes it distinct from others. It can range from home-based businesses to local, national, and finally multinational businesses.
For example, my mother runs a home-based business of frozen goods, a local business, and this is a perfect example of entrepreneurship. See? It does not matter whether your startup is small or big. Besides, everyone starts from step one.
Entrepreneurship Skills:
Obviously, entrepreneurship requires a proper skillset that you need to attain in order to be successful, in the longer run. Here are a few skills that I believe are important for all entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs-to-be.
1. Communication Skills:
You guessed this one, didn’t you? It is a given that as an entrepreneur, you will have to communicate with many people, every day, and for effective communication, you should have excellent communication skills and should try to polish them, time and time again. This can help you to get the right message across to your audience. Make sure that they listen to you because if they don’t, what’s the point of even talking?
Pro-tip: make sure that you have a good command of your native language or your audience’s native language as it can attract them as well as keep them engaged.
2. Marketing Skills & Sales Pitch:
This is the second most vital skill that you should possess as an entrepreneur; marketing skill. You should know how to market your business and also be able to sell it to your potential customers. After all, what is your business without customers? For the proper marketing, you need to study your targeted audience thoroughly and then figure out marketing techniques, accordingly.
And this is where your sales pitch comes in, of course, once you’ve got it all figured out, you now need to convince your potential customers and for that purpose, you should have a certain empathetic yet convincing sales pitch that can set a basis for the growth of your business.
One of the most important and effective marketing techniques is word of mouth. Nothing is more effective than word of mouth, it spreads like wildfire in a forest.
3. Leadership Skills:
As an entrepreneur, you have to set an example not only to your customers but also to your employees. You should be able to handle a crisis, remain calm through stressful situations, and always motivate yourself and your employees to keep improving, each and every day.
Like it or not, you will always be held accountable for your company’s losses and gains. You will be the one to plan, produce, and put things in action because as a leader, this is your prime responsibility.
4. Networking Skills:
I am not saying that your business will succeed only if you have a large social network BUT it is definitely a contributing factor. You should be able to expand not only your professional circle but also your personal social circle. As long as you’re in business and even before that, you should know how to build links, gain knowledge, and learn from other people’s experience and this is only possible if you know how and when to expand your social network. You should have excellent networking skills as they can pave way for greater things in the future.
5. Budgeting Skills:
Your business needs you and the money, of course, so you should possess smart budgeting skills to map out your business budget and do long-term planning of how you are going to manage your finances.
Your business should have enough funds to sustain itself in the market and this is the planning you do prior to starting up your business, e.g. looking for sponsors, shareholders, interested investors, etc.
