Summary

A study suggests that men with "dad bods" are perceived as better potential fathers than those with more athletic physiques.

Abstract

According to research from the University of Southern Mississippi, involving 800 female respondents, men with "dad bods" are considered more favorably as future fathers compared to their more chiseled counterparts. The "dad bod" refers to a male body type that is slightly out of shape but not excessively so, often associated with comfort and stability rather than the need to show off. Women surveyed indicated a preference for men with this body type for long-term relationships and fatherhood, valuing the perceived warmth, approachability, and positive influence on children's body image. The article also touches on the idea that women prefer men whose bodies are likely to remain consistent over time, suggesting that the "dad bod" is a sign of authenticity and reliability. While acknowledging that "dad bods" can pose health risks if not managed, the article emphasizes that physical attractiveness is not the sole factor in romantic relationships, and that humor and the potential to be a good father are highly valued traits.

Opinions

  • Women tend to associate "dad bods" with being comfortable with oneself and not feeling the need to show off.
  • Men with "dad bods" are seen as better potential fathers due to perceived warmth, approachability, and the ability to teach children new things.
  • The "dad bod" is preferred by many women for long-term relationships, as it suggests stability and a focus on family rather than self-image.
  • There is a sentiment that men with athletic bodies may be too narcissistic or preoccupied with physical appearance to be ideal fathers.
  • The article suggests that the appeal of the "dad bod" lies in the predictability of the body type over time, which aligns with women's desires for stability in a partner.
  • Despite health concerns associated with the "dad bod," the article posits that women value humor and the potential for a man to be a great father over physical perfection.
  • The preference for "dad bods" in the context of fatherhood challenges the societal ideal of the muscular, athletic male body as the universal standard of attractiveness.

The Dad Bod: Why it’s a good thing

The “dad bod” is a term that’s been making the rounds again lately, and it has people both intrigued and perplexed.

For the uninitiated, a ‘dad bod’ is a man’s body that is slightly out of shape, but not excessively so. It’s the kind of body that says, ‘I’m comfortable with myself and I don’t feel the need to show off.’ The ‘dad bod’ is also associated with being strong, capable, and stable. This is in contrast to the “cool guy” body, which is more muscular and athletic but also has a certain attitude and coolness about it.

Why do girls love the ‘dad bod’? In a viral post back in 2015 by Mackenzie Pearson, many women think they are a keeper. A hot body goes only that far for attracting females for sex, but for women looking for a long-term relationship, many say the ones with the average body win.

You know what you’re getting.

Girls tend to picture their future together with their guys early on. Therefore, if he already has the ‘dad bod’ going on, we can get used to it before we date him, marry him, have three kids. We know what we are getting into when he’s got the same exact body type at the age of 22 that he’s going to have at 45.

Why are ‘dad bods’ attractive?

From the study, men with ‘dad bods’, top the list while men with chiseled bodies are at the bottom. Science can’t explain it, but everything is based on perception.

Men with ‘dad bods’ are seen as a positive influence on their children with regards to body image.

They are also seen as someone who will teach children new things, while men with rock-solid abs are seen to be someone who gets annoyed with children.

It appears women believe men who are gym bods are too creepy to become fathers, narcissistic in nature, and are good at ogling women constantly.

When women talk about dad bods, we have to be clear about what they mean about it.

Think of Matt Damon and Zac Efron. Will Smith used to belong on the list but after the Oscars, he is canceled. No, he actually lost 20 pounds in 20 days and is now a very fit but angry 50-year-old man.

Key points

Women love men with ‘dad bods.’

Do you need to lose a ‘dad bod’? While there are also studies that ‘dad bod’ can become a health risk, the message of the study brings to the table that dating and real-life romance are two different things.

Sexy bodies will only go as far as having great sex, but women look for more in a man, ‘dad bod’ rocks, and humor is sexy.

To all the men out there, be a great dad whatever your body type.
