Summary

The website content discusses the global prevalence of cultural misogyny, highlighting specific instances of systemic oppression and violence against women in various countries and the fight for women's rights.

Abstract

The article "What is 'Cultural Misogyny'?" delves into the pervasive issue of misogyny that transcends geographical boundaries, affecting women from East to West. It underscores the societal double standards and the oppressive systems that punish women who challenge male dominance while rewarding those who conform. The author draws attention to the global nature of this problem by citing examples from Montreal, Reddit, Egypt, Russia, Sudan, El Salvador, and the case of Billie Eilish. The piece emphasizes the need for solidarity and support for women who are leading the charge against cultural misogyny, often at great personal risk, and calls for a collective effort to address this widespread human rights issue.

Opinions

  • The author believes that cultural misogyny is a universal issue, with no region being better or worse than another, and that it manifests in various forms of oppression and violence against women.
  • The article suggests that men often react with anger rather than empathy when women point out societal double standards, which is indicative of cultural misogyny.
  • It criticizes the hypocrisy of societies that punish women for raising their standards or speaking out against injustices, while simultaneously normalizing violence against them.
  • The author points out the inadequacy of legal responses to domestic violence, as seen in Russia, where the fine for such offenses is akin to a parking ticket, and in El Salvador, where women can be imprisoned for suspected abortions, even in cases of rape.
  • The piece expresses frustration over the lack of outrage towards the objectification of women, such as the anticipation of Billie Eilish's eighteenth birthday by men online, contrasting it with the silence or victim-blaming that often follows reports of sexual assault or harassment.
  • The author advocates for the recognition and support of women's rights activists who are fighting against cultural misogyny, acknowledging the dangers they face and the importance of their voices in the global conversation on gender equality.

What is “Cultural Misogyny”?

From East to West- same shit, different pile

A few days ago, my city- Montreal- marched to denounce sexual violence and rape culture. Although I was not oblivious to the problem, I became aware that cultural misogyny sucks everywhere. It’s not better or worse in any region either- East or West. Unfortunately, nowhere is safe, just different; and it’s all bad.

As I watched hundreds of Montrealer’s take to the streets, I became inspired by the magic of the protest. The solidarity. So, I decided to write this article to highlight that this is a global problem that needs our attention.

There are pockets of women around the world fighting for our rights in various capacities, and they deserve a shoutout. In fact, they deserve everything. A revolution is taking place in Egypt, Russia, Sudan, even on Reddit. From East to West, women bring to light the double standards in our society, and way too many men are angry instead of empathetic. That is cultural misogyny.

A quick google search defines Cultural Misogyny as an attitude of hatred for females because they are female, which is the basis for their oppression. She is a female; that’s their argument. But if you dig a bit further, it's more about controlling and punishing women who challenge male dominance. Misogyny actually rewards women who reinforce the status quo and punishes those who don’t. They don’t hate us; they just think we’re sub-human. How can you say we hate women when we want to marry four? Imagine being so entitled.

Let’s start with Reddit.

There are subs on Reddit that promote all kinds of violence against women, sexualize minors and promote rape that are up and running with thousands of members. However, when a bunch of women decided to level up and started a sub called “Female Dating Strategy.” A simple concept: Choose better men to live a better life; it got flagged as hate speech. Women can’t even raise their standards slightly without men feeling oppressed — so emotional.

Egypt

Over fifty women came forward last month to report their rape, sexual assault, and harassment against the same man, Ahmad Zaki. A real monster. These ladies had picture proof, text proof, voice notes, and complaints made to the university. But guess what, folks? The fifty women are lying. His parents were the first to sue the women; the country slut-shamed them; you send a piece of steak into the jungle expect hyenas to eat it. The real issue here is, why do you see these women as steaks?

Russia

In 2017, after Margarita Gracheva’s husband cut off both her arms off and left her mutilated for life, Russia passed the groundbreaking law of making domestic violence a whole parking- ticket. And the conservative Orthodox church lost their minds, “Anyone lobbying for this law is an enemy of Russia and The Family.” Well, damn, it’s treason not to be able to beat your family. The fine, $79, really scared the men away, especially during Covid-19, where Russia reported a more than double spike in domestic violence from March to April alone (6,000 to 13,000).

Sudan

June 3, 2019, the government released armed forces on peaceful protests with the intent to rape. A crackdown, they called it, instead of mass rape. The government is still in power, and the thousands of rape victims are actively getting silenced. These men sit in control and make decisions in front of the international arena?

El Salvador

Teen- rape victim, Evelyn Hernandez, was given a thirty-year prison sentence for a suspected abortion. Yes, women get jailed for having a miscarriage more than men raping them. The draconian law, which basically condemns you for murder if you have a miscarriage, has hundreds of women fighting for their lives in prison. With all the science and technology in 2020, is El Salvador just pulling our leg? I’m confused.

Billie Eilish

Imagine the world — men of all ages and sizes- waiting for you to turn eighteen at midnight so that they can send you an X-Rated pic. That’s scary. Why isn’t global- male- depravity trending on Twitter?

The internet

Cultural misogyny is everywhere, but we are so conditioned to accept it. An underaged- woman is a little girl. A child prostitute does not exist. Sex with a minor does not exist. Non-consensual sex is rape. Veiled women get raped; it has nothing to do with clothes.

Again, there are pockets of women around the world fighting for our rights in various capacities, and they deserve a shoutout. In fact, they deserve everything. It’s our job to support them in their struggle. These women are finally speaking up, being slut-shamed while doing it, and facing persecution too.

These are just a handful of the bravest women I recently read about. I plan to keep their voices alive by compiling lists like these to showcase the dangers of Cultural Misogyny everywhere.
