What Is Community Building?
The program intended to help students with moderate to moderately severe disabilities develop the essential skills for a fulfilling future. Provide students with the tools, opportunities, and encouragement they need to reach their full potential by valuing all students’ unique skills and developing their individual talents for successful employment. The program consists of the following four components:
Developmental Assessment: Students are evaluated to determine where they stand on the developmental scale. This will allow the program to plan curriculum, learning style, academic success, and activities for each person.
Social Skills: Students engage in at least one of several social skills sessions to construct confidence and relationships. The social skills sessions include crafts, games, interaction, and fun. These sessions give students a chance to show off their special talents and gain insight into their strengths.
Career Development Plan: A career development plan is designed for students. Students are given the resources to develop their abilities and talents and gain an understanding of their career objectives and talents. A career development plan includes:
Aims: The STEPS program helps students identify their targets and achieve them. Aims vary and include self-sufficiency, employment, or higher education, but the overall objective is to develop a person’s abilities so that they can make a difference in their area.
Personal Development: Students are encouraged to explore and enhance their talents’ skills so that they can bring them to the forefront and bring their talents to light. They are also encouraged to create self-awareness and take accountability for their own lives.
Work: The program provides information and tools to students who would like to understand how to get a job. The program enables students to explore their choices and create a plan of action. This plan will include:
The program was developed to promote the growth of each person and helps them reach their full potential. The program is made to help students that have difficulty with their physical or mental skills or who are not ready to join the workforce.
The program’s goal is to prepare students for life beyond the classroom by providing them with a system of activities. It will teach students about career development, career planning, financial literacy, career development planning, and development of personal strengths.

Learning is an essential part of all cultures. The STEPS program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to learn about the cultural heritage of their American Indian brothers and sisters.
Cultural learning opportunities exist within the classroom are limited. Many Native American students are taught about their culture within their studies at the school but aren’t exposed to it in the classroom. This program enables students to participate in a cultural learning experience.
There’s absolutely no lack of cultural learning in the Native American community. The program empowers students to connect with native American cultural leadership and traditions.
Cultural leaders would be the lifeline of many tribes. The STEPS program brings cultural leadership to the classroom and helps students develop the skills to become leaders in this powerful culture.
Tribal students learn their role as a student in the classroom is as vital as the role of a student in the area. The program provides teachers and administrators with a path to bring leadership and cultural perspectives into the classroom and to incorporate these aspects into lessons. This includes:
The program supports students to develop leadership abilities. Students are taught the importance of self-awareness and responsibility for themselves. Pupils are given the support and tools to be successful in the classroom and achieve higher educational goals.
The program encourages community building among students and community involvement. The program will help to enhance relationships with other students and strengthen the community. It is also an opportunity for students to expand their knowledge and understanding of their culture. By building relationships in their schools, the program develops students’ social and academic abilities.
