What If There was a Cancel Media Culture?
Clickbait Headlines are Destroying Our Culture
Clickbait headlines really irk me because the average person is only going to read the headline. Few people, like Medium readers, actually take the time to read articles. As a result, the masses are misinformed on things from celebrity quotes to medical news.
Last week, two headlines caught my attention. One regarded Jada Pinkett-Smith citing that it was “hard” maintaining a sex life with her husband, Will Smith. The other headline regarded Claudia Jordan stating that NeNe Leakes should be happy anyone bought her anything when her husband, Gregg Leakes, recently passed away.
Out of interest, I clicked the article to read what Jada said and while cooking last night, I listened to the episode of Tea-G-I-F where Claudia made her comments about NeNe.
In Jada’s case, the conversation centered on communication, accountability, and how incorrect she was in not communicating her needs to Will but expecting him to read her mind. As a result, it made it “hard” for her. The statements were made in a general sense and later applied to their sex life. In Claudia’s case, she made excellent points about how NeNe has mistreated her castmates in the past, but how everyone loved and respected Gregg. So everyone put their feelings about NeNe to the side out of respect for Gregg and his grieving widow. In a recent radio interview, NeNe voiced dissatisfaction with the Real Housewives of Atlanta cast sending a group flower instead of individual flowers and gifts. Claudia stated, and Al Reynolds confirmed on the show, that she sent a separate flower arrangement, but the media didn’t report that. Claudia also gave NeNe major kudos for being one of the most entertaining people on reality tv, but the media didn’t report that either. The media only reported the comment that showed a black woman putting another black woman down, making NeNe look like an evil person. The media only reported the comment that made Will Smith look like he was making it “hard” to have a satisfactory sex life with his wife.
What if we implemented Cancel Media Culture? That would alleviate a lot of the misinformation circling people’s social media feeds and conversations. It would make the media have more accountability and accuracy in their headlines and reports rather than an agenda, especially on matters of importance like health. It would also help protect the dignity and reputation of others — from celebrities to black lives.
In the interim, please read past headlines and actually comprehend the information in its entirety, and encourage your friends and family to do the same.
