What if Nuclear War Happens

How to survive in the new world

A US nuclear test in Micronesia, 1946. Wikipedia Commons.

A lot of life we take for granted today could be gone overnight.

Electricity, social media, money. A lot of ‘added value’ professions. What would IT or finance people do without technology?

Yes, I hope nuclear war never happens. Let’s take the worst-case scenario. Most of us have died and you managed to survive. What would be of value?

Health.

  • Your everyday survival will depend on your body.
  • Imagine there are no pills for chronic diseases anymore
  • Your feet may become the only way to move around.
  • Foundation for self-defence

What to do?

Make friends with your body, it’s the only one you have. Even if a nuclear war never happens.

Self-defence

  • You might have to fight for your life or property
  • Use your body as a weapon. There may be no technology weapons left
  • Up your fitness, if you’re a pacifist. You might run away from a threat.

What to do?

Practice contact martial arts (Boxing, MMA, BJJ, Muay Thai). Too tough for you? Long and cross-country running could get you out of danger.

Survival skills

  • First aid, to save your own life or people around
  • Fire making
  • Food, finding and cooking
  • Water, finding and purifying
  • Shelter building

What to do?

Learn these survival skills. Most cities have basic first aid courses. Spend a vacation in the wild if you can. Learn from people who are close to nature, such as rangers.

Practical skills jobs

  • Farmers, gardeners, fishermen. Food will always be a priority
  • Soldiers. People always had conflicts.
  • Medicine workers.
  • Builders and fixers such as carpenters and blacksmiths
  • Teachers. Evergreen in any society.
  • Engineers. We’ll need to build and fix machines.
  • Leaders. Organize people and take responsibility.

What to do?

Does your today job rely on technology a lot? Get a practical hobby you like and become good at it. Grow veggies or animals. Make furniture or sew clothes. Learn public speaking. Volunteer to teach kids.

Summary

How to get ready to survive after a nuclear war?

  • Focus on your health
  • Invest into self-defence
  • Learn survival skills
  • Get a practical skill hobby that could become your job

Hope for the best. Get ready for the worst.
