What if Medium Quit?

How would that affect you?

I ponder things a lot. My mind’s wheels are pretty much constantly churning with ideas, ideals, scenarios, etc. And last night while looking up at the ceiling, a thought came to me, which is what if Medium closed up shop?

Think about that for a second.

It’s not really far-fetched. Businesses go out of business every day for whatever reason. Maybe they go bankrupt. Maybe they sell out or get acquired in a hostile takeover. Or maybe they just simply don’t want to do it anymore and say we quit.

If Medium was to suddenly be no more (announced or unannounced), how would that affect you? I asked this of myself, and for me, it wouldn’t do too much harm because I don’t have all or most of my eggs in this basket.

But if you do have all or most of your eggs in the Medium basket, have you ever thought about what would happen if it all went away? Do you have all of your stories saved on your computer or an external hard drive, so that they wouldn’t be purged with the demise of the platform? I’ve been working to make sure all of my stories are safely archived off of the platform, just in case. That way, I could find another way to monetize them.

If Medium went away, do you have another income to replace the income that you’re earning here? If not, then perhaps it’s time to put some things into place. There’s so much talk on here about Medium “going under” and its “downfall”. And we see that writers are leaving and other Medium doomsday stories. And, it may or may not all be true. But, we should all be in a place of safety anyway, in case it is. Because the truth is, nothing lasts forever.

So, if Medium is your main source of income, you might want to think about how you’ll survive if they say that they’re done. Many people on here have made small fortunes in Medium’s first few years, and those people have gotten rude awakenings when Medium changed the rules and the algorithm, causing incomes to be cut in half or even more.

That really pissed a lot of people off.

But, if we really think about it, Medium doesn’t owe us anything. It’s their business and they can do whatever they want. They can make everything real sweet for writers like they did in the beginning or they can cut it and take it away. They can give one person $60,000 instead of giving 60 people $1,000. They can offer $100 and $500 bonus opportunities or not.

They don’t have to do any of these things or they can do them all over again, and even more. The point is we are not employees and we have no contracts promising us anything, and Medium is under no obligation to give us anything.

I told myself: Be glad that you got what you got or what you continue to get from this platform, instead of thinking you’re entitled to keep getting it. And, if you look at it that way, you won’t get wrecked when it changes again or ends altogether. This is what I’m doing. This is how I’m taking it — with a grain of salt.

This is just food for thought that we all need to remember. Writing open letters to Ev Williams or posting disgruntled stories about views, reads, and lost income is futile. I really don’t think those things are going to make a difference. The best thing that we can do for ourselves is just to change with the game when the game changes.

It’s still possible to be successful as a writer on Medium by putting in the work or by getting lucky, one of the two or both. But who knows what the future of Medium will bring? Even doing everything right and building an audience on here won’t matter if they finally put out the Sorry. We’re Closed sign. I just hope they would at least give us a few weeks' notices before they did so that we could salvage any stories from the platform that weren’t yet put in a safe place.

It would mess a lot of people up if they just did one of those exit scams that they talk about in the crypto arena. That happened a bunch in the initial coin offering (ICO) craze days when cryptocurrency projects would raise millions of dollars in an ICO, stay afloat for a few weeks and then suddenly disappear.

Surely, Ev wouldn’t do that to us.

But he could. Remember, he doesn’t owe us anything.

All I’m trying to get across is how much it’s not a good idea to rest on one’s laurels and think that Medium should be here forever. Because we don’t know that at all.

Enjoy it while it lasts — is my motto.
