Summary

The poem "What I Wanted to Say" expresses a speaker's internal conflict between appreciating a partner's generosity and feeling unheard and unsupported in their own emotional needs.

Abstract

The poem delves into the delicate intricacies of a relationship where the speaker acknowledges the partner's positive attributes, such as selflessness and the joy they bring. However, it also reveals the speaker's struggle with their own unmet emotional needs, feelings of neglect, and the desire for recognition and empathy. The speaker conveys a longing to express love without limits but admits to sometimes feeling the need to feign contentment. Ultimately, the poem suggests that what the speaker truly yearns for is not just the partner's presence but also the freedom to exist in peaceful solitude.

Opinions

  • The speaker values the partner's ability to give love and laughter but feels that their own emotional needs are often overlooked.
  • There is a sense of frustration or disappointment in the partner's failure to protect the speaker's feelings or acknowledge their tears.
  • The speaker desires to provide unconditional love but sometimes resorts to pretense due to unfulfilled expectations within the relationship.
  • A contrast is drawn between the joy of the partner's company and the speaker's need for moments of quietness and personal space.
  • The poem reflects a yearning for a deeper emotional connection where both partners' needs are mutually recognized and respected.

What I Wanted to Say

A poem of silent heart cries

What I wanted to say is I love that you give of yourself so freely, but what about me and the things I’ve been needing?

And I wanted to say that you have my respect, but sometimes my feelings you fail to protect.

And I wanted to tell you your laughter is bliss, but the times that I’ve cried, you often dismiss.

And I wanted to make you feel love with no end, but often I’m finding the need to pretend…

…that I want you beside me when all that I need, is the sweet sound of silence

…and space to just breathe.
