What I Mean When I Say “Building in Public”

Maybe It is Not What You Think

“The only limit to our realization of tomorrow is our doubts of today.” — Franklin D. Roosevelt

Introduction

Hey everyone! Today, I want to share a special journey that transformed not only my business but also my life as an entrepreneur. It’s about ‘Building in Public,’ a concept that has revolutionized the way I approach my work and engage with my community.

For many entrepreneurs, Building in Public means sharing the process behind their work, from the initial idea to the final product. But for me, it means sharing my earning reports and goals.

It’s a level of transparency that I never thought I’d be comfortable with, but it has turned out to be incredibly rewarding.

The Awakening

The first time I stumbled upon this concept, I was intrigued yet terrified.

Exposing my financials, my goals, and my progress towards those goals to the world seemed daunting:

  • What if people judged me?
  • What if they thought my goals were too ambitious or, worse, not ambitious enough?

Despite these fears, I decided to take the plunge. Here’s what I learned.

My First Challenges

Of course, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. There were challenges along the way. The fear of judgment was always lurking in the background. It took time to get comfortable with the idea of sharing everything, warts and all.

And yes, there were instances of negative feedback, but I learned to take it in stride and use it constructively.

Another challenge was finding the right balance between sharing enough to be valuable but not oversharing to the point of noise.

It’s important to share content that is insightful, helpful, and real.

What I Have Done

At the moment, I have shared 2 earning reports:

My progress can be considered small but I am very happy to have achieved consistency publishing more than 1 article per day.

I also wrote about my goals for this week and the whole month. I’ll do my best to accomplish all of them:

It’s still a work in progress and I’ll be more than happy to write about the results next week.

The Benefits I have found

2. Accountability

Knowing that there are people following my progress and rooting for me is a huge motivator.

It pushes me to stay committed, work harder, and deliver on my promises.

I take it seriously.

3. Feedback Loop

Sharing my financials and goals publicly invites feedback, and sometimes criticism. But this feedback is invaluable.

It helps me see my work from different perspectives, uncover blind spots, and iterate quickly.

4. Personal Growth

Being vulnerable and transparent is not easy. But it’s incredibly liberating.

It helps in shedding the fear of judgment and embracing imperfection.

It fosters a growth mindset.

5. Building Trust

When I share not only my successes but also my struggles and failures, it builds trust.

People appreciate honesty and authenticity. It makes me relatable.

Final Thoughts

Building in Public, by sharing my earning reports and goals, has been a game-changer for me. It has helped me build a supportive community, stay accountable, receive invaluable feedback, grow personally, and build trust with my audience.

Yes, there were challenges, but the benefits far outweighed them.

If you’re an entrepreneur on the fence about Building in Public, I would encourage you to give it a try.

Start small, share something that you’re comfortable with, and gradually open up more as you feel comfortable.

Remember, it’s not about sharing every minute detail, but about being transparent, authentic, and real.
