Things I Love Most and Least About Medium

  1. I love the freedom of expression here. We really can write whatever we damn well want.
  2. If someone doesn’t like what we write here on MuddyUm they don’t have to read it. They can walk on by, as the song says.
  3. I’m so thankful for my many awesome fellow MuddyUm writer friends.
  4. The easy peasy Made-for-Dummies formatting on MuddyUm. Anyone can jump on here and write — pronto!
  5. For the most part, there are ‘no set rules’ on Medium. Anything goes. If you wanna go rogue, break a rule (or two or three) and don’t mind not being curated I say DO IT! Break freeeeeee.
  6. You can export all your Medium stories to use in your future writing life.
  7. You can post as often or as little as you want. Any time, day or night...

Things I Dislike Most About Medium:

  1. There is no way to directly message someone. This means we can’t leave someone a message unless we put it inside one of their existing stories. That’s always baffled me.
  2. Some people take this Medium writing thing wayyyy too serious (ie, the grammar, typo police, the ones who freak if they have a bad week, those who are insistent on following stringent Medium “RULES!” etc. ) I mean we aren’t trying to win a Pulitzer Prize for writing here, or are we? I know I’m not. For some of us, it’s just pure FUN, Period.
  3. The abundance of advice stories on Medium. (yawn…)
  4. The clap. I’d be FINE doing away with the Medium clap feature. I think the platform might be even better with just highlights and comments. That way you can have true connection with a reader.
