What I Learnt From Messing Up My Latest Blog Article

These important tips will help when you run into issues like this

Photo by Callum Skelton on Unsplash

If you haven’t had this happen with your blog, you are bound to mess up sooner or later. I made a huge mistake when I wrote about Chadwick Boseman’s death. I could have easily made the edits in the blog article but there were several things wrong in the article. In the end, I had to delete the blog and rewrite the article.

This was painful and I was somewhat embarrassed. A few fellow readers had already read the article. Now I had to delete what I wrote. One writer, Steven Anthony, pointed out the error I made, and I am deeply grateful.

The struggles along the way are only meant to shape your purpose.

Chadwick Boseman

Sometime after Boseman died, I read an article and thought I saw he died from prostate cancer instead of colon cancer. Of course, I gathered the information from Twitter, and there anyone can say the wrong thing and many take that as the truth. I should have verified the information on a legitimate news site rather than taking the word of a Twitter user.

Just now, I searched for Chadwick Boseman and prostate cancer and many people mentioned his name and prostate cancer. Prostate cancer and colon cancer are very different.

I tried to edit the blog as best as I could

You fail only if you stop writing.

Ray Bradbury

After I saw the mistake I made, I thought I could edit the word prostate for colon cancer. That part was easy. In my article, I was able to search for prostate cancer and then change the word to colon cancer.

When you have to make minor changes, it’s easy to do. This only took a few minutes. Other changes you make could take a little more time.

My second step took a little more work

Writing to me is simply thinking through my fingers.

Isaac Asimov

After I was able to change the cancer to the correct disease, I had to research and edit the details and cause of the cancer. This took a little more time but I had to correct my mistake.

I was worried other readers would clink on the article since the article was live on the internet. So I knew I had to make the changes as fast as I could. I didn’t want someone who knew how Chadwick had actually died to correct me a second time. I was already embarrassed and for one person to point that out was enough.

My third step forced me to delete the edited article I wrote

All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know.

Ernest Hemingway

The changes I was making to the article were going well. Something was telling me to check the domain of the article. If the domain said prostate, I would have to delete the entire article.

Just as I thought the article domain said prostate. I had to swallow my pride and delete the article.

As a writer, this is something you have to make sure is correct. Having the wrong article domain will prevent readers from finding your work if they searched for it. Additionally, if someone checked the domain, they could call you out and think you don’t know what you’re doing as a writer. Both of these results would not be good or help you as a writer.

Keep the article as is

One of the basic rules of the universe is that nothing is perfect. Perfection simply doesn’t exist… Without perfection, neither you nor I would exist.

Stephen Hawking

There is always the idea to keep the article as is with the mistakes. Then you are sharing false and inaccurate information. It’s best to correct your mistake as soon as you can. If you have to delete the article you already published, then you have to do this.

As a writer, you are putting your word and your integrity on the line for the world to see. You don’t want to develop a bad reputation that you share false information. That might as well end your writing career.

Depending on the topic, you never know if your article goes viral. Later on, if someone points out that you wrote an incorrect article, that could really backfire and ruin your credibility in the writing community.

You are one small part of a large writing community. With the internet, word travels very fast. You don’t want your name associated with bad writer. The two do not go together unless you truly are a bad writer but I know you’re not.

Take the hard right over the easy wrong

Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.

C.S. Lewis

It is very easy to leave the incorrect article, as is. Other people may or may not notice. There is a chance many people may not notice. But then there is the chance people will notice.

Rewriting the article will take time. As a writer, you need to be as truthful as you can be unless you’re writing a fictional story where your words can go in any direction.

If most of your writing is non-fiction, then you need to be as truthful as you can. This will require research and time so you can write the best information possible.

Taking the word of Twitter users will require a little more due diligence on your part. We live in a world of fake news. Either intentionally or unintentionally, someone can easily put out bad information. Verifying your information you use as well as the source is very important especially if you want to be seen as a credible writer. What you write can have a big impact on your future.

Spend the additional time to do the research and try not to be in such a rush. The additional time you use to research or put together the best information for your article will definitely be worth it.

Your fans will love it. Your random visitors will love it. Lastly, you’ll love yourself for doing the extra work and giving 100% effort as you put together your best work.

You might not think this additional work will be worth it. But the additional time and effort will pay off. Someone is always watching you - what you write and how you handle yourself when these little issues come up.

Do you take the easy short cut and leave the wrong information up for the world to see? Or do you take the additional time and effort to provide your audience with the best possible information available?

Make the right decision and your work will pay for itself.

Have you made big mistakes in your writing before? What did you do?
