What I Learned From Spending $190 on Facebook Ads
Lessons learned about Facebook Ads as a beginner
This quarantine made me come up with some new ideas and taught me how to make money online. I discovered a few ways and one of them was drop shipping, but I won't go in depth about this business model here. I will just say that I decided to sell jewelry.
The favorite part of online business for me is building a brand and advertising products. This is how I found out about Facebook Ads.
Facebook Ads turned out to be frustrating at the beginning, but as time went by, I became familiar with it and understood how game-changing this is for marketing agencies and people who want to advertise their business. Facebook Ads gives you all the tools you can think of to get your brand out there. Facebook Pixel alone is a very helpful tool.
What I love about the service is that they will try to give you as many customers as they can, in order for to them make money from you. Facebook won't just take your money and leave, if you spend $100 and earn $200, you are likely to advertise further. Everyone wins.
I tried to sell jewelry, necklaces specifically. I didn't completely waste my $190, because I got three sales. But still, the profit was very small.

I will share some lessons that I learned, and I think they will be useful to some people. I am not an expert in this field, although I would love to become a full-time digital marketing specialist. These are mostly beginner tips for people who are interested. I didn't take any courses, I have read some articles and watched YouTube tutorials in order to understand how this works.
The Importance of Digital Marketing
Almost every person you ask will say that this is vital if you want success. Experimenting in marketing is fundamental if you want to understand what people like and what they don't like, which product sells and which doesn't, which demographic you should target, and so on.
Experimenting enables you to take a deeper look at insights and understand how you should advertise. A great marketer always tries several variations in order to find the best one.
If you want to see what type of ad works better, you have to only change one thing. If you change your ads’ placements, don't change anything else. Because if your ad will be successful, then you won't understand which specific change brought you that result. The same will happen if your ad won’t be successful.
I think what you should experiment the most on, is your creative, be it your photo, video, or caption. Don't hesitate to spend money on these things because this is the face of your advertisements and you should make them as good as possible. I personally experienced the shift in clicks and interest among people when I changed my creative.
Statistics
Another part of experimenting is to analyze your outcomes. Facebook Ads offer very useful insight on your ad performance. Always check which demographic, interest, photo, or something else works better. Try to reduce your CPC or other indicators in order to make your ads more effective.
Use the audience insights function to determine what your audience likes, where they live, what pages do they follow, etc. This will help you gain some knowledge about people you are targeting.
Never assume that certain types of people or certain photo will bring you sales. You have to make conscious decisions according to data. Data is your best teacher, learn what customers want and what will likely be successful.
Statistics not always are going to give you absolutely true information, but they will help you with your decisions. Having statistics as your compass is a lot better than having your head as your compass.
Don't Dig Deeper
If you just noticed you are in a hole and don't know what to do next- don't dig deeper in order not to make the situation even worse. This can cause a major loss of money, or burning out on your side. If you notice something doesn't work, maybe try to change something and expand in a different direction. Don't repeat the same things and be aware of what you are doing. Step back and refresh your view on the situation.
Learning from Mistakes
Mistakes teach you so much. Marketing is full of mistakes, learn from them. Actually experiencing and doing will teach you how to be a better marketer. No book can teach you more than you can by practicing.
Don't think that mistakes only waste your time and money. You are a step ahead of those who didn't make mistakes at all. It's just how life works, you either make mistakes or sit and do nothing. Think of the most successful person you know, he or she made an enormous amount of mistakes, a lot more than you did.
If you face a mistake in digital marketing, it's especially easier to notice what's wrong because you have a lot of useful insights there to help you. All you have to do is not repeat those mistakes.
Mistakes typically cause quitting. The only thing that can stop you from doing something is you. You decide whether you want to quit or keep going. I won't say that you should never give up, keep that in mind.
You Can’t Waste Money on This
Even if it feels like you are spending money on nothing, you are basically buying data that will help you and your Pixel advertise better. Don't expect the first $100 to instantly bring you sales. Some people are really impatient about this. Wait and results will come if you are using your data properly.
Spend Money on Creative
Better photography, better captions, better videos will always bring you better results. These are the face of your ads so you should invest to make them catchy and representative of your brand. Try multiple of them, this will give you needed insight to understand which one works better.
Your Product
Your product also matters a lot. I noticed that those products that have a defined niche are a lot more effective to advertise. For example, instead of selling general jewelry, try to sell jewelry with animals on it. This will help you a lot with targeting people who are likely to buy from you. Jewelry is a very broad niche, but if you find people who love jewelry and animals at the same time, you will be able to sell more of your jewelry . Narrowing your niche will definitely help you target your market.
Conclusion
These were the things that I learned from my digital marketing experience. I loved to advertise and search for that audience that will buy from me. I recommend watching YouTube tutorials or taking courses to understand more about Facebook Ads. Facebook Ads is a perfect tool for almost every business in the world. This is certainly a job of the future and a lot of companies will hire people who are specialists in this field.
Do I regret spending this money on basically nothing? Of course I do, but I wouldn't be experienced at all if I didn't even try. A person who made three mistakes and never succeeded is more likely to succeed further than the person who managed to make a successful business from the first try.
Why did I fail? I think that my biggest mistake was the product. It would have been a lot more effective to run ads for a more niche-defined product. And also, I didn't experiment enough. Don't repeat my mistakes.
However, don't only focus on Facebook Ads, there are a lot more ways to advertise online. Influencer deals, Snapchat Ads, Google Ads, and other services also offer very good tools to help you get customers.
Don't take my article as the ultimate truth about digital marketing. These are the lessons I learned by advertising for a month online. I didn't get the best results but I saw the potential behind digital marketing and learned a lot.
