What I Learned By Running For 1 Day.

Yes, I didn't run for 1, 2, 10, 20 years, but…

Yep, today I got out to run for the first time. Some experienced runners can be really angry at me right now because they've been doing this for years or decades and here is some random guy talking about what he learned by running one time, but hear me out.

First of all, this article is mainly for people who are not yet running or thinking about starting. And secondly, this will also be helpful to people who are running regularly. Because based on my experience when you are doing something for a long time, you can forget about actual benefits and feelings certain habit, exercise or hobby brings to you. So my article can show people beginner’s perspective on this. According to one of the practices in Buddhism:

“Look at everything with a beginner’s mind, because it is open for everything. In beginner’s mind, there are many possibilities, in expert’s, there are few.”

But my own experience is entirely different from others, so we can disagree on some points here, and it's completely normal. This article does not show any benefits or tips after running for a long time, these are just my thoughts after my first run. It's pretty interesting how my opinion is going to change as time goes by.

It’s Good For Mental Health

I think it is not a secret to some people, but running outside can benefit your mental health and peace of mind in several ways.

  • It's stress relief.
  • You are closer to nature.
  • If you run without music, you can go inside your mind and think.
  • Or go out of it, concentrate on running or breathing, now you are basically meditating.
  • Your self-esteem receives a level up. (I never knew I can run 4km. With pauses, but anyway)

Pushing Yourself To The Limit

Going out of your comfort zone is incredibly powerful. By getting yourself out of the bed and going for a run, you are not only benefiting your health but also practising self-discipline. Which is vital in quarantine.

Defeat Quarantine Laziness

Speaking of quarantine. Global lockdown made us all sit at home and drastically reduce our activity. By going out for a 30-minute run, you can benefit your organism that is not moving as much as it used to. Remember to not break the law and run with responsibility.

Room To Grow

This kind of exercise offers incredible metrics. You can measure your distance, speed, time per kilometre, calories, rest pauses. That's why it’s easy to see how you are improving over time and set yourself goals to achieve, like running farther or quicker. I love that, because it can motivate you to always improve and never be stuck at the same level.

Final Thoughts

Whether you are an experienced runner or want to start, I hope you found some benefits from my points. If you want to start running, just try it, and find out yourself. My article format is entirely different from others on Medium, but I think that mine gave you some inspiration.
