What I Found After a Week of Taking Surveys

A potential side hustle?

Since the Covid-19 pandemic began, like many others I found myself at home much more than expected. I searched for ways to make use of my newfound “free time” and wanted something productive yet unrelated to my day-to-day coding job. I began delving into woodworking, home improvement projects, and even chainsawing— I have a lot of dead trees in my backyard. All of these were great at keeping my idle hands busy but they required a fair amount of physical exertion.

I looked for less strenuous activities with a bias towards the ones providing extra cash. Soon I found several articles about drop shipping, blogging, affiliate marketing, and taking surveys. The last one seemingly required the least amount of commitment. After sifting through various survey websites and mobile apps, I found five that were noteworthy.

5) Survey Junkie

Pros

  • Plenty of survey opportunities
  • Has a low cash-out minimum of $5

Cons

  • By far the worst points-to-time ratio at around 4 points a minute
  • Surveys are difficult to qualify

I tried this one first because it came recommended by several sites. Most of the time I would get rejected or wouldn’t qualify. The amount of time to points never seemed worth it either.

Recommendation: SKIP IT

4) Branded Surveys

Pros

  • Great website and mobile-friendly
  • Decent points-to-time ratio

Cons

  • No mobile app
  • Only 3 surveys available at a time
  • Surveys are difficult to qualify
  • Has a higher cash-out minimum of $10

The website is well done but they lack a mobile app. Fortunately, the site is mobile-friendly so it’s not a deal-breaker. Similar to Survey Junkie, they use a points system but their payouts are significantly better. Even so, I didn’t have much luck qualifying and earned the least with this one.

Recommendation: SKIP IT

3) Surveys On The Go

Pros

  • Decent payouts
  • Most reviews on Google Play with over 85K
  • Good customer service

Cons

  • Website only exists to download the mobile app
  • Very few surveys offered
  • Boring user interface
  • Delayed payouts
  • Has a higher cash-out minimum of $10

I discovered this app while downloading another on Google Play. It had a decent rating and the most reviews by far — more than double the others. I received my first $2 payout here but on more than one occasion a survey would get stuck and I would have to restart the app. When reaching out to their customer service, they responded promptly and provided credit.

One drawback with the app is you’re tied to your phone. Their website’s purpose is only to direct you to their mobile app. Sadly, the user interface leaves much to be desired and can get rather boring to look at after a while.

They only offered a handful of surveys and the available list seemed to refresh infrequently. A couple of surveys delayed payout whereas most would compensate immediately. The popularity of this app eludes me but so many people can’t be wrong?

Recommendation: TRY IT?

2) InboxDollars

Pros

  • $5 sign up bonus
  • Largest survey payouts
  • Has a fun lottery-type interface

Cons

  • An overwhelming number of ways to earn
  • Mediocre cash-to-minutes ratio (with a few exceptions)
  • Has the highest cash-out minimum of $15

I signed up primarily for the $5 bonus but discovered the most earning opportunities with this one. The most prevalent being their sweepstake scratch-offs. These included 3 tiers — the higher the tier, the greater the potential prize. Reaching the highest tier was reasonably obtainable by completing various actions within the app: opening inbox emails, watching videos, doing surveys, and so on. The max advertised prize for the highest tier scratch-off is $200 — the most I won was 5 cents.

Watching videos is an alternate way to earn but I calculated the payout to be around 1 cent per minute. I did this once and quickly moved on. When it finally came down to the surveys, I received my highest payout of $3 for a 15-minute survey. I saw as much as $4 but did not qualify.

Recommendation: TRY IT

1) Qmee

Pros

  • Best UI/UX overall
  • Consistently the best cash-to-time ratio
  • Has the lowest cash-out minimum of $0
  • Gives a 10% daily streak bonus
  • Offers the most variety of surveys every day
  • Excellent customer service

Cons

  • None

Qmee was the fourth app that I tried but it quickly became my favorite. The survey offerings seemed never-ending and I qualified for most of them. I would occasionally have to push through a row of rejections but it didn’t take long to get on a good earning streak again. The cash-to-time ratio was the best paying around 7 to 15 cents per minute, if not more. I found the most $1+ surveys here and they even offered a 10% daily streak bonus — I had no hesitation coming back to this one.

Recommendation: TRY IT!

Conclusion

After the week had passed, I’m convinced that taking surveys is a viable side hustle. It requires no experience and you can make some cash — I made $130 — with minimal effort. If you’re like me and find yourself wasting time on social media, why not take a survey instead and get paid.
