Summary

A mother reflects on her son's evolving career aspirations, from traditional professions to his current desire to become a YouTuber, while grappling with her own expectations for his future.

Abstract

The narrative captures a poignant moment between a mother and her grown son as they discuss his latest career ambition. The son, whose hands have grown to dwarf his mother's, still carries the childlike enthusiasm for his dreams, now setting his sights on becoming a YouTuber. The mother, while supportive, can't help but reminisce about his past dreams, which included more conventional careers like a paleontologist, vet, and doctor. Despite her initial patronizing thoughts, she acknowledges his passion and vision for his YouTube channel, though she harbors a hope that he might still choose a more traditional path or at least marry someone in a stable profession. The story concludes with an invitation to subscribe to the author's work and a nod to Black History Month, suggesting a broader context of storytelling and cultural celebration.

I struggle not to roll my eyes and suck my teeth*.

Instead, I let a few moments pass. Then, I gag my patronizing tone and say, “You could be a doctor. It’s a future-proof profession.”

“I have a vision, Mom, a whole channel planned! It’s gonna be epic, trust me.”

My eyebrows tent upwards, and I think, Maybe he’ll marry a doctor.

“Tchewp.”
