What Have You Done With Your Hair?

“Life is short. You might as well live it with really great hair.” (Anonymous)

I was one of the lucky ones,

Born with soft malleable brown hair;

The type you could twist and turn,

Or just let be.

After childhood and adolescence,

Laced with episodes of growths and trims

Plus authority figures dictating what should be or shouldn’t,

I made it to adulthood with something in between!

My signature is cornrows;

Cos it always turned out so good.

And other times, I would wander into the world of braids.

Whatever time was left, I would let my hair be,

Free from stretches, extensions, and attachments!

Fast forward to the present;

There is a new trend in my style.

I still do the cornrows, weaves, and braids;

But I have shifted,

From the default colors of black and brown;

To deep blues, purple and golden brown.

Perhaps if you knew me in my former life,

But met me at the bus stop,

You might walk right past!

This experiment with colors,

Marks the transition,

From my childhood and adolescence of dictations,

To adulthood showcasing the liberal side within.

Do I love it?

Hell yeah!

And folks, when I decide it’s time to go bald,

Please do stop to say hello!
