What Happens When We Follow Our Story
Quality versus quantity matters when we write.
Sometimes what I’m trying to say gets lost. I can’t find my way to express the spaciousness as well as the depth of an event, emotion, memory.
The examples inside are caught in a crossfire scorched by the sound of how much I can share.
Sometimes when I write it is translating a feral animal hidden in a closet waiting to see if it is safe to let the stories be seen.
Fortunately, there’s usually a protectiveness that swallows me and tells me,
This piece has too many avenues and you’re writing without a compass. Your headlights are off and it is dark. That hairpin road almost ended you. Slow way down.
Writing isn’t a race. It isn’t about comparing your style with someone else. Your experiences are as unique as the condensation hugging a window.
Your eyes have heard contradictions and your heart knows the critical mass of life isn’t always a pretty picture.
You feel the levels of sound as a vibration welcoming you to the center of your storms and you balance the equations the best you can between the roar.
You are finding laughter under the eaves peeking out more and more; that sound is fresh and unfamiliar so it might take longer to befriend.
Writing is an endless story. Each word tumbles over the other but the beauty isn’t how quickly it is translated into a story; quantity is rarely successful when it is a message from the heart.
Quality is about feeling and honoring the stories we keep, process, and sometimes find the courage to share.
Opinions are subjective. We won’t always be accepted for what we write. And still we persevere by waking up before the sun has touched the sky. We don’t sleep because our thoughts collide. The moon’s effervescent holy sounds welcome us in whatever state we offer.
Our home’s windows and doors become safer; there’s an invisible thread that ties off the footsteps that once visited our bed.
We know, with less doubt, our stories will pour out into a net stitched of validity, zeroing in on our new found playfulness, uncovering the qualities no longer lost because we have created a topography to navigate without an ordinary map.
The keys we’ve found are our destiny to follow and honor our soul’s story.
