Abstract

The author begins by recounting a post seen in a Facebook group about the disappearance of the Medium publication "1-One-Infinity," which elicits a mixed reaction of sadness and indifference, akin to watching a house fire when one's own home is safe. What Happens When Medium Publications Go Away?

Your Worst Halloween Nightmare

This morning, I woke up to a post in a facebook group. Someone said, “gee, it looks like 1-One-Infinity went away. Oh well, I have my own publication now, so it’s no big deal!”

Kind of like watching a house fire. You didn’t live in it. It’s sad, but oh well, you still have your own house.

I don’t know about you but whenever I see a house fire, I get sad even though I didn’t live there. Probably because I grew up with a dad who was a volunteer firefighter. He went to ALL the fires in my community when we were growing up. Scared the crap out of the whole family every time he left for one.

If you lived in the house, you just lost all your belongings. And you are so blessed if you come out with no belongings, but still have your life.

I did a quick search this morning and sure enough, 1-One-Infinity is not a listed publication on Medium. I have my own ideas about what could have happened. Maybe it’s a tech glitch. Maybe there’s just a temporary cloak of invisibility over it and it will be back.

Maybe the owner of the house suspected a house fire and ran into the blaze to put it out.

We may never know.

I published a few things there. I’m glad I did what I’m about to tell you to do.

Here’s my very best MuddyUm advice to all the writers in this house.

BACK UP the truck and dump your belongings into it and keep it in a safe place.

It’s just a good idea to safeguard that which is important to you.
