Abstract

The article delves into the author's journey from believing in the "happily ever after" portrayed in movies and books to the sobering realities of adult relationships. What Happens After?

Not A Happily Ever After For Sure

Disclaimer: They lie in your favorite books and movies

As a child, I used to wonder,

and even wish for,

that happily ever after.

The one shown in my favorite movies.

and written about in my favorite books.

I craved for that Knight in shining armor,

To come to rescue me,

even when there was nothing to rescue me from.

Never once wondering,

What happens after the supposed happy ending?

As I grew, I began to question,

Do I really need that fairy tale ending?

But my heart still craved,

Because who doesn’t want

That perfectly depicted romance to be a part of their life?

When the time came to choose a life partner,

I was judged and questioned,

Rather than being accepted for who I was,

Mostly I faced rejection because I didn’t look or behave a certain way.

That was the beginning of the end of my happily ever after crushed by reality.

I found someone who accepted me and loves me,

But it’s not always happy as they said.

There are disagreements and tempers running high,

There’s compromise, sacrifices, and adjustments at every turn.

They never prepared me for this being the what comes after?

There are happy moments of course,

And all of it is worth it.

Because though it's not always sunshine and smiles, and it gets dark and gloomy,

You’ve got someone to have your back.

And frankly, that’s better than any Happily Ever After.
