Summary

The author, Jim, an alcoholic, shares his journey of embracing spirituality through AA, which led to a transformation in his life, making him feel too blessed to be stressed.

Abstract

Jim, a self-proclaimed realist, found himself at a crossroads in life where his own strategies and experiences were insufficient to manage his alcoholism. Despite his initial skepticism, he turned to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) for help. Through the program, he discovered the value of spirituality, observing its positive impact on others and eventually experiencing its benefits in his own life. Jim fully committed to the spiritual principles of the program, applying them daily, which significantly improved his well-being and recovery. He credits his spiritual teachings and the AA program for his newfound perspective of being too blessed to be stressed.

  • He admits that his life became unmanageable, and his coping mechanisms, including drinking, were no longer effective.
  • Jim's negative emotions, such as hatred and guilt, were part of a cycle that led to his alcoholism.
  • He was skeptical about spirituality, identifying as the head of a fictitious "Agnostics-R-Us" group, but was convinced by the tangible improvements he saw in others' lives.
  • Jim's approach to recovery and spirituality is one of full commitment and willingness to go to any lengths to maintain his sobriety.
  • He considers himself addicted to everything, including spiritual guidance, and uses the motto "Fake it till you make it" as a practical strategy in his recovery.
  • Jim expresses gratitude for the spiritual teachings and the AA program, which he believes have profoundly blessed him and alleviated stress in his life.

What Does Spirituality Have To Do With Me

After all, I lived this long, didn’t I

Ever wonder what all the fuss was about? “I’m too much of a realist to think that I need Spirituality in my life. I have common sense and who needs anything more?”

I do, for one! My common sense, my realistic approach to life, my dependence on myself using my life’s experiences, my so-called knowledge, and on and on, got me to crawl, emotionally, to AA asking, begging, for help.

Why? Because something just was not right in my life. My life had become unmanageable and my tricks were not working anymore.

I didn’t like me so I hated you. If I hated you, I hurt you. If I hurt you, I felt guilty. If I felt guilty, I felt remorse and then what does an alcoholic do when remorseful? When startled, a deer runs, a fish swims, and a bird flies. And this alcoholic drinks!

What could be more natural? I was the prayer leader when it came to begging God to get me out of this particular mess and I will never do it again. We all know how well that worked, huh?

How it Works was read before most meetings when I first came into AA in Detroit and the 2nd paragraph jumped out at me right away when it says “If you want what we have and are willing to go to any lengths to get it…” then ‘Come On Down!’

I wanted what you had and was so low in my life that I was willing to go to any lengths. That is how I started my recovery program and still use it that way — I am willing to go to any lengths to not only get it but to keep it.

I was the head of the local chapter of Agnostics-R-Us, so to speak. When I not only heard how Spirituality was greatly improving other people’s lives but also saw it working in their lives, I wanted it and jumped in head first.

Remember, my name is Jim and I am an alcoholic and I don’t get started in anything that I want hesitantly. If you were to offer me a pill that you say will make me not be an alcoholic anymore, my first thought would be “I wonder what 2 would do.”

I am addicted to everything, including ice cream, cookies, and the Spiritual guidance provided by this fabulous program. It was somewhat awkward at first but, as soon as I started working it and adding the motto Fake it till you make it, I started getting everyday demonstrations that it was working.

Now, I use my spiritual teachings all day long every day and this is why I believe that I have truly become Too Blessed To Be Stressed.

Thank you, God!
