What Does My Spirit Want to Experience Today?

And how can I help It accomplish that?

There’s a gentle spirit within us all.

In the book Living Untethered, Michael A. Singer states that at our core, we aren’t our bodies or our thoughts, but our spirits. We’re the observer of our thoughts and actions. That’s the essence of who we really are.

And if this is true, then who I am is currently housed in a body and mind named kasey. I understand this on some level, but it’s also a complex concept for me to grasp because my body has tangible mass and my mind is busy and loud. It’s easy to identify with them and to think they’re who I am.

My spirit, on the other hand, is light and quiet. It’s hard to feel it under the weight and activity that goes on within this person named kasey.

But I believe the Divine wants us to understand who we are. It wants to be in a relationship with us and will use any means to send us insights — sometimes from the most unlikely places.

An insight into this concept happened recently while watching the show King of The Hill with my sons. In this particular episode, Hank Hill’s niece Luann performed a puppet show called Manger Babies. As I watched, I let my mind wander. I wasn’t really paying attention to what she was saying.

Instead, I noticed how all the puppets lay flopped and lifeless on the puppet show stage. Then as Luann’s hands slipped into each one, they sprang to life. Her hands gave each one energy and animation.

And that’s when I had a glimmer of illumination.

I suddenly saw the book’s message in a whole new way. Luann’s hand is like my spirit. It’s currently housed in this human puppet named kasey. My spirit animates me. It gives me life. My spirit is tethered by an arm to the Divine. My mind then expanded to see that within all of us resides a hand — a spirit — all of which have arms tethering us to the Divine.

We’re all spirits housed in human puppets connected to the same source.

The difference is that Luann’s puppets are made of felt and googly eyes with no agency. Humans are created with flesh and blood and a mind that can act on its own. We come preloaded with preferences, talents, limitations, and quirks.

And we’re messy. We can act in ways that follow the mind and body instead of our spirit. But our spirit is connected to the Divine. And the Divine knows what’s best for us.

The spirit needs a body and mind to experience this earth. It needs a body and mind to experience being human. My spirit chose this human named kasey to walk and talk and do all the other things a human can do in this lifetime.

One of the unique things about being human — for most of us anyway — is having five senses. When I leave this earth plane and whittle down to just my spirit, those assets will no longer be part of me — at least that’s how I imagine it’ll be anyway.

So while I’m in this puppet of skin and bones, I’d like to make the most of it. I’d like to enjoy what this earthly body can do.

Things like enjoying the taste of summer’s bounty of fresh sweet corn. The musical notes created by a favorite band’s music or roaring claps of thunder. The smell of granola baking. The sight of the early morning sun glowing on my back porch post. The tender touch of someone’s hands on my skin.

And then I have to wonder.

What experiences does my spirit hope to have? What does my spirit hope to feel? To taste? To touch? To see? To smell? Am I giving my spirit those experiences?

What is my spirit asking of me?

All of this brings me back to the importance of meditation because my spirit doesn’t speak with words so much as a quiet invitation. It invites my body and mind to dance in harmony with it during this lifetime. This invitation emanates from the Divine and travels down the arm into the hand — my spirit. My body and mind can either accept the invitation or not.

That’s what free will is.

My mind and body can be bossy creatures though. They like to be in control. The human named kasey doesn’t always follow my spirit’s invitation to dance.

But meditation helps quiet the urges of my mind and body so that I better heed my spirit's invitation. It helps me begin to work with my spirit, not against it. To act and dance in harmony with it. To identify more with it.

It’s then that I begin to turn the equation around. It’s not my spirit. It doesn’t belong to me.

It is Me.

I’m the one inviting my body and mind — this human named kasey — to dance. It’s a hard concept to hang onto yet when I can, it opens me up to self-acceptance, self-awareness, and possibility.

After all, I’m the one who chose to inhabit this human.

When this human cooperates, I can work in tandem with her. We become a dynamic duo of sorts.

And the questions then become — What experiences will this human named kasey help Me have? How will she help Me express myself? What will she help Me do? What will she help Me accomplish?

Who will she help Me love?
