So what is the Top Writer Badge?

What does it change?

What advantages do you receive?

If you know answers to these questions, please write in the comments because I have no idea…

Joking a little. Or not…

How Did I Get It?

It was a complete shock for me to get Top Writer Badge in Technology topic. The reason is that I’m a newbie on Medium — only 1 month of writing.

I published the first article on the 5th of November. Then a couple more to the end of the month. All I got were 50 views for November.

Then my 4th article ever went viral. It changed the game.

In the very last days of November, It began to receive 200–300 daily views. Then it jumped up to 1,5k views in a single day! I was thrilled.

So I decided to write new articles on a similar topic.

Well, they weren’t so popular as the first one. Still, it was enough.

Shortly after publishing the 3rd article with similar tags on a single topic, I got an email from Medium. Congratulation email. I became a Top Writer on the topic of Technology.

What’s Next?

That email was really flattering for me. Technology is a very popular topic, and it’s complex to become a Top Writer there. Have a look at the competition.

Also, the email contained a link to the article that presents a new Medium feature — the Top Writer Badge. While it was interesting to read, it wasn’t too illustrative.

That article provides screenshots that don’t fit the current Medium design. It promises that the Top Writer Badge will be displayed in your profile. Well, it is not true. There are no badges on my profile or anyone else.

Plus, there is some advice on how to increase your chances for the Top Writer reward.

Quality

Our system prioritizes writers who publish stories that garner significant reading time. Publish stories that engage your readers and spark conversation.

Frequency

Top writers publish stories about their topic frequently — and they make sure to tag each post with the relevant tag. The more frequently you write about your expertise (and tag it), the better your chances of making the list.

Loyal audience

The more readers that find and read your stories, the more likely you will become a top writer. Continue exploring ways to grow your loyal following, building momentum with each story.

Like a valuable clue, I received a list of your stories that made an impact.

This information proved my theory about writing on the same topics (tags).

Any Advantages?

Actually, I don’t know…

On the next day, some of my stories became “Distributed by curators”. So I suppose that the Top Writer badge at least attracts attention.

No surprise that chosen stories received more views and read in the following days.

The fun fact, that none of them were related to Technology.

Final Thoughts

The Top Writer badge is a pleasant reward. You want to receive it. But it isn’t so important for your Medium success.

You can write articles of high quality that gonna become viral without that badge.

Still, it may affect algorithms deeply in Medium heart. No proof of this theory.

Personally, for me, the Top Writer badge is an encouragement for you to keep going and work harder. It means that Medium noticed you, and there are chances for success.

It inspires me to write more and to write better things!
