What Do You Have To Show For This Year?

31,536,000 seconds. 525,600 minutes. 8,769 hours. 365 days.

31,536,000 seconds. 525,600 minutes. 8,769 hours. 365 days. 52 weeks. 12 months. This is how much time we have on our hands each year.

Multiply all of these numbers by your age.

Now, the question of the hour is: what have you done with all of this time, and what do you have to show for it?

For most people, not enough.

What do we have to show for our lives then? All we have to show for our time on this earth are selfies, years spent climbing corporate and social ladders, lackluster memories, regrets, debt, broken promises, meaningless materialistic items, rampant addictions, unadventurous adventures, and unfulfilled potential.

“Many times an old person has no other evidence besides their age to prove they have lived a long time.” — Seneca

We Don’t Respect Time.

Humans have a blatant lack of respect for time; we take it for granted. We incessantly forget two things: 1. we are slowly dying, and 2. our lives can be over at any second. Yet, we continue to live in complacency, thinking to ourselves, “I’ll start tomorrow” or “I’ll do that [goal] someday.”

You might even fall into the trap of vicariously living through other people’s lives that are more productive than yours. A perfect example of this is how rampant reality tv and videos are. We are addicted to watching other people do stuff instead of doing stuff ourselves.

What Will You Think When You’re Clock Runs Out?

At some point, we will die. From the day you come out of the womb, you’re a ticking death bomb. When your time comes, will your final thoughts lean more toward the first statement or the second?

A) I made the most of my life. I became a better person for myself and others. I’m thankful for my life and all of my contributions to the world. It’s easy to show that I lived x amount of years by the progress, wisdom, and knowledge I’ve amassed.

B) What the f*ck did I do with my life? I have nothing to show for it.

A Yearly Ritual: Take Time To Reflect

At the end of each year, I reflect on what I accomplished in several areas of my life. I also take inventory of all the changes and impediments I had to overcome (this is an enlightening piece of truth) for the year. We cannot improve our lives without reflecting on our lives. We cannot elevate our lives without understanding where we currently are. The following areas matter most to me:

  • Health
  • Career
  • Finance
  • Spiritual
  • Generosity
  • Relationships
  • Knowledge & Wisdom

What areas matter most to you?

We owe it to ourselves to carve out time to reflect and take note of how we spend our lives each year; doing this, will lead to us maximizing our limited and unknown amount of time on this planet.
