A Terrific Way to Keep Our Brains Healthy

Mindfulness — Focusing our attention on the present moment

Picture by me above the clouds Sept 2021

Our minds really work the best when we give our brains a break. Constant running without stopping wears on both our body and mind.

Mindfulness is focusing our attention on the here and now — on the sensations within our own bodies. It is a way to be kind to ourselves.

Mindfulness can help decrease pain, anxiety, stress. It can be helpful to shift our focus to something else, such as the sounds around us and our breathing — it calms our minds.

A guided mediation that includes focusing on our breath, our heartbeat, or on sounds that are both surrounding and inside ourselves is a gentle way to be present.

I recently recorded a guided meditation. The bird sounds are from my back porch. The recording took place on a nice calm summer morning. It was part of a class I took in integrative health specialization recently. I hope you will enjoy it. The link is provided below.

I recommend using mindfulness meditation every day of the week before getting out of bed or before falling asleep. Paying attention to your body 10–15 minutes a day can help reset the mind and decrease stress on the body. This includes both pain and sleeplessness. Mindfulness meditation will improve your quality of life and your sense of well-being.

Life, in general, can be very stressful. The pandemic gives an additional elevation to everyday stress. Simple daily tasks can be overwhelming when our systems are already working on overdrive.

Healthcare settings, work, and home life can be very stressful. Caregivers in many different settings, including hospitals, clinics, and the community are continuously caring for other people. It is important they care for themselves as well.

Taking a moment to go outside, to enjoy the sun shining and the breeze surrounding us can have a great healing effect on the body and can be very relaxing.

I love walking amongst the trees and plants in our back yard — even just standing in the sun. A most recent experience I greatly enjoyed, much to my surprise, was walking in the light warm rain while visiting Florida. It was very refreshing.

Every moment of quiet and stillness helps heal our body, mind, and brains function better.
