What Do We Do With Our Golden Collection of Cassettes?

March Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Retro or Old”

Where are the cassettes of yesteryears?

I opened one of the cupboards that I had not opened for a long time. I was greeted by a large number of cassettes lying safely.

We had a collection of cassettes. Every time we went to the market we would listen to the melodies and buy one.

Cassettes used to be affordable and when the tapes broke, we would just replace them.

My husband would give it to a music shop to get it recorded and in both our cars we played the music and enjoyed it.

This was an easy fit for every home and so reasonable in terms of the cost factor. The only problem was that the thin wiry tape inside would break after a while. That could not be repaired and had to be replaced.

The pride of every home was a collection of cassettes. This was a great advantage for the music industry as music flourished.

People who never listened to music also had blaring music in their cars and also at parties.

In fact, sometimes we could barely talk at parties as people could not hear anything but loud music.

DJs were popular at programs.

One of the most significant advantages of cassettes was that they were portable. Unlike the big records, which had to be transported with bulky turntables, cassettes could be played on small, battery-powered devices.

During that time boomboxes, Walkmans, and car stereos were popular and people enjoyed music on the go, while taking a walk or jogging in the park, driving on a road trip, or commuting to work.

Cassettes also had their disadvantages. The analog format was susceptible to wear and tear, leading to hissing, warbling, and sound quality degradation over time. The quality of the music reduced over time.

When CGs and MP3s came into the market The rise of digital formats, marked the decline of cassettes.

Digital media offered superior sound quality, greater durability, and the convenience of skip-free playback. By the early 2000s, cassettes had fallen out of favor, relegated to nostalgia and niche markets.

They are now old or retro and nobody even looks at them. We do not have devices to play them. They are lying quietly in our cupboards and all we can do is throw them in the dustbins.
