What Did Manna Taste Like?

It doesn’t matter — that’s not the point

Recently I heard a sermon on the story of manna from heaven. The preacher said the people were glad to get the disgusting taste of manna out of their mouths and return to eating regular food.

Disgusting?

Manna was disgusting? As many times as I’ve read and heard about that story, I’ve never heard manna referred to as disgusting.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “I have heard the Israelites’ complaints. Now tell them, ‘In the evening you will have meat to eat, and in the morning you will have all the bread you want. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.’” (Exodus 16:11–12, NLT)

What did manna taste like?

The Israelites called the food manna. It was white like coriander seed, and it tasted like honey wafers. (Exodus 16:31, NLT)

The manna looked like small coriander seeds, and it was pale yellow like gum resin. The people would go out and gather it from the ground. They made flour by grinding it with hand mills or pounding it in mortars. Then they boiled it in a pot and made it into flat cakes. These cakes tasted like pastries baked with olive oil. (Numbers 11:7–8, NLT)

Sounds pretty good to me.

So the people of Israel ate manna for forty years until they arrived at the land where they would settle. They ate manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan. (Exodus 16:35, NLT)

Were some of the Israelites bored with manna? Yes. Is it likely that they were glad to finally have a variety of foods in their diets again? Probably.

But the point of the story was not what they ate.

The point was that God wanted the Israelites to trust Him and learn to appreciate their freedom.

Don’t let anyone tell you that God would provide for our needs, as He has promised, with something “disgusting”.
