Maxims of Confucius in Today’s World
They Are Applicable in Today’s World

We must’ve all heard about Confucius, the famous Chinese philosopher, poet and politician who was born in 551 BC and died in 479 BC. Many famous quotes are attributed to him. Some of them are:
“Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.”
“Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”
“The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential… these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.”
However, the one, which I like and I find to be true is this one: “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
Many of us are born with different talents and abilities. We don’t all have the same talents are abilities. Imagine a world where everyone had the same talents and abilities. We would all be working only one job. It is because we have these different abilities, that there are different jobs available. It’s true that some jobs are high paying and some jobs are low paying and some jobs require high skill, whereas some jobs require low skill. But the bottom line is, people are needed to fill those positions, or those jobs are not going to get done.

This brings us to my former article on medium “Uncertain Future and Loss of Childhood” and you can read it here. In this article I explain how parents, especially tiger moms who take an interest in their children’s future want their children to excel in studies or in various sports or the arts even though the children want to do something different. As a result, the children suffer the loss of their childhood, which they can never get back. In some case, the hard work they’ve put in may be all for nothing, as you may never know what the future holds. There may not be jobs in those fields they study for or they may not want to work in those fields at all once they attain majority.
Now coming back to being born with different talents and abilities, it is a fallacious concept with some parents especially in Asian countries that their children should only become engineers or doctors and that if they don’t become any of those, their children will not be able to make a lot of money. Not true. Many people become writers, models, screenwriters, accountants and also sportsmen and have wonderful fulfilled careers.
Parents choosing a career path for their children just because they couldn’t make it or because they think it will make them rich and give them security in the future is not a good idea, as the child is a different individual and not an extension of the parent. Even a person choosing a career path just because he thinks it will make him rich, but when his heart is somewhere else isn’t a good idea. It’s as Confucius said. He will view it as going to work and not view it as something he loves or looks forward to doing it. True there will be days when he gets sick and tired of doing it, but then we do get sick and tired of some of our family members whom we love but we forgive them, and life goes on. In the same way, we go back to loving what we love doing and life goes on.
At the end of our careers and even our lives, we must have that satisfaction that we contributed wholeheartedly without regrets to a field, which we were passionate about. If someone who doesn’t like medicine becomes a doctor, then he may end up killing a patient, because his heart and soul are not into it. His passion lies probably in painting and that is what he should be doing. So he is not contributing wholeheartedly to a profession he isn’t passionate about. He may also never become a doctor as he may not like studying the subjects or cannot stand the sight of blood.
That is why, parents and even young people must remember what Confucius said. He was a wise man, and he knew a lot about life. He probably learned from his experiences or learned from the experiences of others and came up with these wise saying, which have thankfully passed down the ages. So, let’s follow them and pass them down to the succeeding generations.
